Job Description

Hood Industries, Inc. is a blend of wood manufacturing and distribution concerns that include plywood and lumber manufacturing plants, and twenty-three specialty wood product distribution operations, located in eighteen states serving the northeast, southeast and southwest United States.

We are looking for a Deckperson Scaler for the Beaumont, MS plywood facility. The primary purpose of this position is to assist the Lathe Operator with operations and maintenance of the lathe.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist the lathe operator in ensuring that the lathe is in proper operating condition/setup to properly process logs for the next step in the process to manufacture veneer for plywood manufacturing.
  • Operate the lathe in the absence of the Lathe operator and correct any upset conditions during the process.
  • Monitor the lathe throughout the operations to ensure continuous operation and detect any potential issues.
  • Assist the Lathe Operator with changing lathe knives as needed.
  • Communicate with maintenance concerning any operational issues.
  • Use an assortment of hand tools to complete daily clean-up duties, such as air hoses, shovels, etc.
  • Work with minimal supervision, in a safe and productive manner.
  • Must be able to follow written and oral instructions.
  • Adhere to all safety, health, and company policies, procedures, and guidelines. This includes wearing personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Work any shift, holidays, weekends, and overtime as needed.
  • Work in a hot, cold, noisy, industrial environment.
  • Pull and lift at least 50 lbs.
  • Perform tasks such as lifting, kneeling, walking, climbing, stooping, standing, pushing, and/or pulling for up to 12 hours per day.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Experience in a manufacturing environment.
  • Experience working with wood products.
  • Experience operating mobile equipment.
  • Strong understanding of the lathe preferred.
