70%: Conduct Writing Consultations

  • Facilitate and foster student learning by asking questions, collaborating with writers during consultations, and teaching important writing strategies and concepts
  • Contribute to the creation of a welcoming and collaborative environment for learning

15%: Provide Additional Writing Center Services

  • Lead writing workshops and assist with marketing events
  • Develop writing resources like handouts, workshops, and videos
  • Facilitate writing groups for undergraduate students

10%: Participate in Professional Development

  • Participate in pre-service training and ongoing education, trainings, and professional development
  • Participate in committees and special projects, bringing your ideas, interests, and skills to expand the collective knowledge and abilities of the Wingspan

5%: Other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications

  • Excellent written communication skills as evidenced in application materials
  • A commitment to the improvement of one's own writing and professional development as a writing consultant, as demonstrated in application materials
  • Willingness to work in multiple modalities (face-to-face, online, videoconference)
  • During the semester term of the appointment, the student hourly must be enrolled in no fewer than 6 credit hours. For summer periods the student hourly must: 1) have been enrolled in no less than 6 hours in the past spring semester or 2) be pre-enrolled in upcoming fall semester in no less than 6 hours or 3) be enrolled in summer session or 4) be admitted to study in the upcoming fall semester. Student Hourlies may be undergraduate or graduate students. (Exceptions granted for GRA/GTA/GA appointments DO NOT apply to Student Hourly appointments)

Preferred Qualifications

  • A Federal Work-Study (FWS) award for the academic year
  • Previous experience as a writing consultant or peer tutor at a high school or college
  • Experience with public speaking
  • An investment in helping writers reach their academic goals with strong listening skills, sensitivity, generosity, and flexibility
