Idaho Power - located in vibrant Boise, Idaho - is looking for two Garage Technicians to join our Operations Support team. It's an exciting time to work for Idaho Power. What does a Garage Technician do for us?

The Garage Technician performs preventative maintenance, trouble shooting and repair, major overhaul, and general repair work on gasoline and diesel engines, advanced hydraulic, electrical systems, pneumatic and other power equipment.

A COMPETITIVE CANDIDATE WILL HAVE

Knowledge of:

  • Mechanical, electrical, hydraulic fundamentals
  • Operating characteristics and testing procedures for hydraulic, electrical, mechanical, and pneumatic systems
  • ANSI, OSHA, Department of Transportation (DOT), and state regulations on transportation and construction equipment
  • Safety precautions
  • Tools and procedures for this type of work
  • Welding and some fabrication
  • Gas and diesel engine troubleshooting and repair
  • DOT inspections
  • Complex diagnostic tooling, high voltage test equipment

Skills in:

  • Effective oral and written communication
  • Use of computers including utilizing Microsoft products and time-entry software
  • Following oral and written instructions

Preferred:

  • Some fleet maintenance software and inventory management

Ability to:

  • Diagnose and repair mechanical and electrical problems
  • Interpret schematics, mechanical, and electrical diagrams
  • Work well with others or independently when necessary
  • Resolve conflicts
  • Familiar with vehicle interfaces, scanning, and programming

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education:

  • High school diploma or GED

AND

  • Completion of a Vocational school in Diesel or Automotive

OR

  • Equivalent experience in a related industry

Experience:

  • 5 years of heavy-duty mechanics experience with an emphasis in field repair including hydraulics, with some automotive background

Preferred:

  • 7 years of heavy-duty mechanic experience, with a strong background in field repair, hydraulic repair
  • Extensive background with utility type equipment, automotive and truck repair

Licenses & Certifications:

  • Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record based on driving requirements for the position
  • Department of Transportation (DOT) medical card
  • Current DOT FMCSA 49 CFR Part 383 Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or ability to obtain within 90 days of hire

Preferred:

  • Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Certification

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

This position works within the shop or in the field to maintain, inspect, and repair all equipment/vehicles within the IPC fleet. Frequent use of hand tools/equipment requires repetitive gripping and good manual dexterity. Sustained postures with frequent twisting, bending/stooping, kneeling, lying, and reaching with occasional crouching and crawling to maneuver under vehicles/equipment is necessary. Climbing ladders and onto/from trucks/equipment is required as well as occasional work operating and testing equipment up to 75-110 feet in the air. Pushing and pulling of up to 135 lbs. and lifting up to 115 lbs. (waist height), and 67 lbs. (shoulder height and overhead) is performed. Job placement is contingent upon successful completion of a pre-employment physical evaluation for the Department of Transportation (DOT) medical certificate. Successful applicant must provide and maintain personal toolbox and a moderate set of hand tools.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

This position could have limited supervision and requires working in all types of environments and adverse weather conditions. Must be a self-starter and a very motivated person. Must live or relocate within 45 minutes of the Operations Center. May be required to work alternate hours to meet customer needs including working swing shifts and weekends. Respond to and repair vehicles on an emergency call-out basis and outside of normal working hours. Occasional out of town travel with some overnight stays.

Temporary employees are eligible to apply for internal job postings. In order for your current position to be held for your return, qualified employees must have supervisory approval to participate and have been in their current position for at least six months.
