Job Summary
The Emergency Department (ED) Staff Pharmacist is responsible for providing comprehensive medication management services in a fast-paced emergency care environment. As an integral member of the multidisciplinary healthcare team, this pharmacist plays a critical role in ensuring the safe, effective, and timely use of medications, enhancing patient care, and promoting optimal pharmacotherapy outcomes.
Job Duties and Responsibilities
Collaborates with the ED healthcare team to develop, monitor, and optimize patient-specific medication therapy.
Prepares and labels medications for administration to ED patients.
Reviews ED medication orders, including during emergency codes, resuscitations, and high-risk procedures.
Provides pharmacotherapy expertise, including drug indications, dosing, adverse effects, and monitoring, to clinicians, nurses, patients, and families.
Participates in code response within the ED and hospital-wide.
Contributes to medication safety and quality improvement efforts.
Obtains accurate and comprehensive medication histories from patients.
Verifies medication orders for ED and other hospital departments.
Serves as a clinical resource for providers and support staff across the hospital.
Provides patient discharge medication counseling and education.
Supports antimicrobial and opioid stewardship initiatives.
Responds to pharmacy consults and medication-related inquiries.
Dispenses medications and provides drug information to hospital staff and medical personnel.
Job Requirements
Required Education
- Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy or higher from an accredited college of pharmacy
Required Licenses and/or Certifications
Current licensure as a pharmacist in the state of Idaho, or eligible for licensure within six months of hire
Basic Life Support (BLS)
Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) - or ability to obtain within six months of hire
Preferred Qualifications
Experience in emergency department or hospital pharmacy practice
Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification
IV admixture preparation experience

Physical Demands
Lifting: Occasionally up to 25 lbs. from floor to waist; 12 lbs. to overhead (2x/hr, up to 8x/day)
Push/Pull: Minimal force to push carts 100-200 feet
Carry: Up to 25 lbs. for 20 feet
Fine Motor Skills: High level required for medication preparation and syringe manipulation
Standing/Sitting: Up to 60 minutes at a time; up to 8 hours/day
Kneeling/Climbing/Stooping: Minimal, up to 5-20 minutes/day
Other: Frequent reaching, typing, writing, phone/computer use. Constant visual acuity, hearing, and communication
Environmental Conditions
Primarily indoors
Occasional exposure to moisture/humidity from handwashing
Occasional noise distractions from printers/telephones
Occasional exposure to caustic or toxic chemicals (e.g., chemotherapy agents)
Minimal exposure to blood or body fluids
