Role
The Platform Engineering team is responsible for building backend platforms on Whatnot. As the Engineering Manager of the Platform Engineering team, you'll focus on developing, maintaining, and setting the vision for a scalable platform that serves and enables Whatnot engineers to develop product features at lightning speed while ensuring customers have a stable and secure experience.
In addition, you'll:
- Hire and develop engineers across all platform applications and backend systems.
- collaborate with product engineering and infrastructure engineering counterparts to set strategic direction of the team, advocating for technical platform solutions that help us grow Whatnot as a whole.
- plan and manage projects, coordinating and aligning your team's goals against others across the business.
Team members in this role are required to be within commuting distance of our San Francisco, CA, Los Angeles, CA, New York, NY, or Seattle, WA hubs.
You
In addition to embodying our cultural principles, great candidates will also:

- be a technical leader with hands-on experience in large distributed systems.
- have experience leading a team of engineers, guiding them through both their career development, and executing in a high growth environment.
- be low ego, an appetite to build, and employ good judgment in making hard trade-offs with limited resources.
- effectively recruit, mentor, retain, and measure high performing teams.
- effectively manage stakeholders, competing priorities and deal with ambiguity
- have substantial hands-on experience of doing the job you'll be managing.
- have a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or equivalent work experience.
