Job Description
The starting rate for this position is $26.70, and is negotiable based on skills and qualifications. ONLY during the summer months, there will be several weeks that this position will have to work a night shift 6PM—6AM on an as needed basis for 3 days at a time.
Summary
This Maintenance Technician position drives a diesel powered tractor trailer combination to transport and facilitate delivery of pullets (young stock) across our facilities in all weather conditions, with safety being the first consideration. The purpose of this position is transport livestock and maintain equipment for transport. Other duties include performing general maintenance and completing equipment repairs during time in between driving.
Key Responsibilities
- Drives truck safely to destination, applying knowledge of commercial driving regulations.
- Transport birds safely from one location to the layer farm destination
- Monitor conditions to make sure birds are being handled in safest possible methods to prevent injury or mishandling to birds.
- Helps with bird move activities, pushing carts, disinfecting tires, and operating lift gates.
- Make sure everything is secure in the trailer.
- Prepares paperwork to meet regulation for travel, document deliveries, and prepare logs to ICC regulation.
- Inspect tractor/trailer, submit reports of indicating vehicle condition.
- Helps facilitate vehicle tractor, trailer and lift gate maintenance.
- Follows all Biosecurity measures
- Helps facilitate and complete Bird Cart Maintenance
- Helps facilitate and complete Bird Cart and Trailer Cleaning and Disinfection
- Helps haul tankers of wastewater to destinations
- Helps operate other equipment to perform outside maintenance tasks
- Other duties as assigned
Qualifications

Education and/or Experience
- A CDL Class A with a satisfactory driving record is required for this position.
- Experience handling heavy equipment including skidloader, wheel loaders, etc.
- Previous experience in maintenance is preferred, but not required, and experience in food manufacturing or agriculture is very desirable.
- Welding or fabrication experience is preferred
- Limited computer skills are preferred.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Communicate effectively with staff and customers.
- Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating manuals, weight tickets etc.
- Ability to write common business English and numerical data, as used on shipping bills of lading, gas receipts, trip reports, etc.
- Be able to read and understand chemical disinfectant labels.
Physical Demands
Stand and walk constantly; grip, grasp, push, pull, reach, bend, stoop, lift up to 10 pounds frequently; sit, climb, lift up to 50 pounds occasionally.
Work Environment
Frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts and water, and chemicals. Temperature is regulated for operations standards. Cooler temperatures occur in specific areas. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. Proper personal protective equipment will be required during certain working conditions. Employees are required to comply with Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP’s) due to working in a food manufacturing environment (hairnets, clean clothes, etc.).
