Job Description
Midwestern University (MWU) is offering a one-year internship focused on aquatic animal medicine. This program is intended to provide clinical training to prepare the intern for a career working with exotic species and for the rigors of a zoological residency program. This program will primarily take place at an off-site local AZA accredited aquarium, OdySea, in addition to the affiliated Butterfly Wonderland.
The selected candidate will have a forty-hour work week with alternating weekend and after-hour on call. Interns can expect to have primary case responsibility, as deemed appropriate, under the supervision of OdySea's veterinary team.
The intern should expect to see a wide variety of cases and species, though heavily aquatic based. Both formal and informal teaching experience is gained through regular interactions with students on the clinic floor, as well as assisting in clinical skills labs and presenting limited didactic lectures. The intern is required to present two formal seminars (grand rounds and M&M rounds) to house officers, faculty and students at MWU. The selected candidate will also be expected to participate in mentored research with the goal of submitting a first author publication.
By the end of the internship, a successful intern will be a competitive applicant for residency programs.
