Job Description

Job Summary

The Visual Art Program has an ongoing need for custom framing for student shows and the university collection/archives. Damaged frames in the collection need to be fixed or replaced. Each art exhibition has unique needs from traditional to contemporary frame designs that often require the fabrication of new frames. This position includes researching, designing and building custom frames, identifying practical and sustainable solutions for Visual Art program, and documenting the procedures and practices required for the various framing solutions.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Research framing styles and generate frame designs appropriate for the type of art being framed.
  • Design, construct, carve and finish frames.
  • Make rabbit skin glue, clay bole, and gesso mixtures for water gilding
  • Apply finishes to frames including, painting, water gilding (gold leaf), antiquing, clear coating
  • Learn and use CNC software.
  • Operate and maintain CNC routing machine.
  • Create drawings of frame moldings
  • Document weekly progress
  • Define written and visual step by step procedures for reproduction of each frame style
  • Safely operate, hand and power tools including, table saw, skill saw, miter saw, planer, routing table, hand router, sander, and other joining tools
  • Maintain, clean and functional workspace (clean/store tools for safe and effective operation)
  • Design and build accurate jigs for carving/routing moldings.
  • Use hands saws and chisels with precision for a variety of joinery solutions
  • Assist in supervising/training new employees

Work Experience

  • Wood working Experience
  • Familiarity with power tools and their safe usage
  • Proficiency in Adobe and other design applications
  • Experience Carving Wood and other hand skills
  • Design, draw, and communicate visually
  • Attentive to detail and superior craftsmanship
  • Work independently and find solutions as circumstances demand

Working Conditions

  • Indoor office/studio space for CNC router, Computer work and other design activities (air conditioned)
  • Outdoor use of power tools and hand tools (Shaded)
  • Requires physical lifting of wood, movement and set up of tools.
  • Spraying or other potentially hazardous environments require appropriate masks.

Hourly Rate:

$16.00
