Job Description
Respiratory Therapists in the Pulmonary Diagnostics Lab are expected to have a fundamental, working knowledge of anatomy and physiology, pulmonary disease processes, diagnostic procedures, and therapeutic modalities.
Responsibilities and Duties
Arterial Blood Gas (ABG), EKG, oximetry, capnography, and chest x-ray analysis and interpretation.
Medical gas cylinders and regulators.
Oxygen delivery devices.
Clinical experience with operating mechanical ventilators.
Therapeutic pulmonary modalities.
Pulmonary function testing for adults and pediatrics (DLCO, FVC, Lung volumes, Pleth).
Tests done include Methacholine challenge, Complex pulmonary exercise, Six-minute walk, and Exercise-induced asthma.
Assists physician with bronchoscopy and interventional bronchoscopy such as EBUS, navigational, argon plasma coagulation, stent placement, fiducial placement, bronchial thermoplasty.
Assists with intubations as needed.
Does cleaning and set-up of the PFT lab as well as the bronchoscopy suite.
Performs patient charting and charging as appropriate on the Epic EMR.
While performing job functions related to respiratory medication administration, personnel may access medication storage areas.
Completes patient care procedures appropriately.
Cooperatively responds to changes in work schedule and workload.
Completes all appropriate patient care charting and charging.
Actively participates in educational programs and in-services for pulmonary diagnostics staff.
Actively works to improve department and the patient care provided.
Current and complete portfolio at the time of the annual performance evaluation.
In order to be eligible to be promoted into this position an employee cannot have had a disciplinary action documented on a Corrective Action Form within the previous 6 months. Verbal/Written warnings are not included in this process.
All work completed on a performance improvement project or lean project that works to support Valley Health Key Performance Indicators (KPI) is taken into account with performance evaluations and reviews.
Education
Completion of an accredited educational program for Respiratory Care is required
Experience
One year of experience as a Respiratory Therapist is required
Certification & Licensure
Respiratory Care Practitioner (RCP) Virginia state license is required
ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) Certification or EKG & Pharmacology Course is required within 45 days of hire
BLS (Basic Life Support) Certification - American Heart 'Healthcare Provider' (HCP) - AHA approved is required. * New hires must have American Heart Association (AHA) appropriate certification prior to the completion of orientation.
National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT) with 5 years of experience or Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) is required
Qualifications for Pulmonary Diagnostics Lab Level II
Strong motivational, time management, and organizational skills required
Strong verbal communication skills required
Ability to demonstrate competency and perform consistently under non-routine conditions and complex situations required
