Job Description

The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), located at the foothills of the Rocky Mountains in Golden, Colorado is the nation's primary laboratory for research and development of American energy independence and energy efficiency technologies.

The Environment, Safety, Health, and Quality (ESH&Q) Office supports mission performance and operational excellence across NREL through prevention, compliance, and process improvement.

This ESH Point of Contact position supports research and development centers by providing technical guidance for hazard identification and control on research activities, site-operations, and subcontractor/construction activities. The successful candidate will work frequently and independently with researchers, support staff, senior managers, subcontractors and Department of Energy (DOE) counterparts related to NREL operations to continuously and proactively improve ESH.

The ESH Point of Contact will:

  • Apply advanced ESH technical skills to tasks within areas of expertise such as industrial hygiene, occupational safety, electrical safety, lockout/tagout, construction safety, emergency response and other areas individually or in combination.
  • Participate in (Level IV) / Lead (Level V) ESH inspections, audits, and oversight assessments.
  • Interface and communicate with executive management, line management, and DOE counterparts through the delivery of presentations and reports related to ESH performance of ongoing project.
  • Respond to staff inquiries, concerns, and requests for assistance on ESH matters including guidance on ESH program implementation and/or interpretation
  • Develop and facilitate other ESH training to various organizational units including health orientations and onboarding.
  • Support development of emergency response plans. Provide specialized task, technical guidance, or assistance at a hazardous substance release incident. Facilitate post-emergency response stabilization efforts.
  • Support accident/incident investigation and causal analysis as needed. Follow-up on corrective action implementation.
  • Performs or facilitates Process Hazard Analysis (PHA). Recommends safety measures accordingly.
  • Provide of facilitate design and/or code compliance reviews and communicate these requirements to all level of staff.

Basic Qualifications

Professional V - Relevant Bachelor's Degree and 14 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience. Or, relevant Master's Degree and 12 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience. Or, relevant PhD and 9 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience. Or, relevant JD and 9 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience. Applies advanced technical principles, theories and concepts. Contributes to the development of new principles and concepts. Develops advanced concepts, techniques and standards. Develops new applications based on professional principles and theories. Viewed externally as subject matter expert in field. Comprehensive and advanced knowledge of laws, regulations, principles, procedures and practices related to specific field. Superior leadership, project management and problem solving skills. Ability to use various computer software programs.

Professional IV - Relevant Bachelor's Degree and 9 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience. Or, relevant Master's Degree and 7 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience. Or, relevant PhD and 4 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience. Or, relevant JD and 4 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience. Applies extensive technical expertise, and has full knowledge of other related disciplines. Contributes to the development of new concepts, techniques and standards. Considered internal subject matter expert. Extensive knowledge of laws, regulations, principles, procedures and practices related to specific field. Excellent leadership, project management and problem solving skills. Ability to use various computer software programs.

Additional Required Qualifications

Level V

Required:

  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP) and/or Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH).
  • Strong working knowledge and experience in electrical safety and applying NFPA 70E Standard.
  • Demonstrated understanding of electrical systems and design.
  • Demonstrated understanding and experience working with drawings for electrical and mechanical systems.
  • Ability to lead and participate on both intra-office and cross-organizational teams.
  • Ability and willingness to work weekends and/or evenings on occasion as need arises (emergency response, construction support, special projects).
  • Ability to travel on occasion.
  • Proficient computer skills, including MS Office Suite, email and ability to quickly learn database software applications, such as FileMaker.
  • Ability to perform site work that can involve extreme weather conditions and moderate physical exertion.
  • Ability to walk one mile continuously, able to stand continuously for two hours, able to lift and carry 45 pounds.

Preferred:

  • Familiarity with Hoisting and Rigging Operations.
  • Familiarity with working at heights.
  • Experience working in a research and development environment such as a laboratory or university.
  • Strong chemical safety training and experience - such as a minor in chemistry or biology, or experience as a chemical hygiene officer.
  • Familiarity with DOE 10 CFR 851 Worker Safety and Health Program and in Integrated Safety Management Systems.

Level IV

Required

  • Ability to participate on both intra-office and cross-organizational teams.
  • Ability and willingness to work weekends and/or evenings on occasion as need arises (emergency response, construction support, special projects).
  • Ability to travel on occasion.

Annual Salary Range (based on full-time 40 hours per week)

Job Profile: Professional V / Annual Salary Range: $117,200 - $211,000

Job Profile: Professional IV / Annual Salary Range: $97,800 - $176,000

NREL takes into consideration a candidate's education, training, and experience, expected quality and quantity of work, required travel (if any), external market and internal value, including seniority and merit systems, and internal pay alignment when determining the salary level for potential new employees. In compliance with the Colorado Equal Pay for Equal Work Act, a potential new employee's salary history will not be used in compensation decisions.
