What We Offer

We are offering a hiring bonus of $5,000 to new employees hired from this recruitment. The details of the bonus will be discussed at interview and/or offer. Note: The hiring bonus will not be applicable to City and County of Denver employees who are currently employed with the city or who have been separated from the city for fewer than 6 months.

The City and County of Denver offers a competitive salary commensurate with education and experience. Although the fully salary range is posted, the starting salary range for this position is $34.00-$38.00/hour. We also offer generous benefits for full-time employees which include but are not limited to:

Location & Schedule

This position will be based either at Roslyn (5440 Roslyn St., Denver, CO 80216) or Central Platte (1271 W. Bayaud Ave., Denver, CO 80223). The shifts available are 6:30 AM - 3:00 PM or 2:30 PM - 11:00 PM. Both the shift timing and location will be determined and discussed during the hiring process. There is a 7% pay increase for the later shift!

Fleet Management looks after 2,400+ vehicles and equipment, aiming to keep 96% or more city vehicles available. The team oversees vehicle use, maintenance expenses, replacements, new vehicle purchases, heavy equipment, and fuel contracts for Denver's City and County vehicles.

The Fleet Management team has an opening for a Fleet Technician III. This is an excellent position for an experienced mechanic who enjoys working on a variety of vehicles. In this role, you will be assigned to a line in the fleet shop for the repair, inspection, and maintenance of light, medium, and/or heavy fleet vehicles and equipment and will use a variety of fuel technologies including gasoline, diesel, electric, CNG, and other alternative sources. We also have all the latest diagnostic tools and manufacturer training!

Specifically, as a Fleet Technician III you will:

  • Conduct routine and annual inspections and perform preventive maintenance on all vehicles, while coordinating usage issues or unusual repairs with vehicle manufacturers

  • Prepare and maintain documentation, records, and reports including inspection reports to identify and document vehicle accident damage and needed repairs, this also includes responding to field calls on equipment in shop or field locations

  • Diagnose and repair gasoline, diesel, and alternate fuel powered engines on light and heavy equipment utilizing standard or specialized diagnostic and measuring tools; diagnose and repair vehicle emission systems; perform Colorado state emissions testing

  • Perform major overhaul of engines and diagnose, repair, rebuild, and adjust engine and powertrain control systems using standard and specialized diagnostic equipment

  • Diagnose, repair, and maintain automatic, standard, and hydrostatic transmissions in conjunction with power take off units, clutches, drivelines, differential assemblies, and final drive units

  • Perform major repair of vehicle power plants and electrical systems; troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair electronic and electrical systems including vehicle computer, transmission, fuel systems, batteries, alternators, starters, relay switches, solenoids, regulators, wiring harnesses, and other related electrical components

  • Repair vehicle heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC), cooling systems; perform radiator repair, replacement of cooling system components, water pumps, shutters, and hoses

  • Diagnose, troubleshoot, repair, and maintain mechanical and hydraulic steering systems and perform wheel alignments, hydraulic systems, braking and traction systems, and repair passive and active restraint system

  • Fabricate, weld, and repair parts using standard welding techniques and tools which includes design and installation of specialized equipment and mounting systems; assist body shop with assessing vehicle damage

  • Coordinate with body shop to assist with estimating and repairing undercarriage, suspension and structural damage

  • Participate in snow removal duties

  • Train and review the work of junior-level technicians and assist higher-level technicians

We provide safety steel-toed boots and uniforms. We require that you bring your own tools to start. After one year of employment, you'll receive a $1,000 tool allowance.

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • Education requirement: Graduation from high school or the possession of a GED, HiSET or TASC Certificate.

  • Experience Requirement: Four (4) years of experience in the diagnosis, repair and maintenance of gasoline, diesel, or alternate fuel powered equipment, including electronic systems, hydraulic systems, transmission and combustion engine overhaul.

  • Education/Experience Equivalency: Additional appropriate education may be substituted for the minimum experience requirements.

  • License/Certifications: Requires a valid Driver's License at the time of application and must be kept current as a condition of employment.

  • Requires a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL "B") with appropriate endorsements within six (6) months of employment and must be kept current as a condition of employment.
