Job Description
Job Summary
Under the direction of the Director of Mortgage Banking, the incumbent will lead the underwriting team, overseeing underwriting processes, and ensuring compliance with guidelines and standards.
Primary Functions
- Review and analyze loan files for secondary market residential mortgage loans (government and conventional) to determine the viability of approving or denying a mortgage loan application.
- Mentor, coach, and provide guidance to team members.
- Oversee the underwriting workflow from initial assessment to final approval.
- Create, maintain, and communicate underwriting policies and procedures.
- Stay abreast of guideline and regulation changes in the secondary mortgage market and communicate changes to all mortgage staff.
- Assist in identifying and mitigating potential risks associated with underwriting decisions.
- Analyze collateral to ensure the property meets the standards of the loan program and investor.
- Consult with mortgage bankers and regional mortgage assistants to aid in resolving mortgage application questions and challenges in a timely matter.
Secondary Functions
- Monitor the file quality of the mortgage underwriting staff, ensuring that all underwriting activities adhere to company policies, regulations, and industry standards.
- Create and maintain resources and training material for the mortgage team.
- Collaborating with other departments to achieve shared goals.
Education & Experience
- 5+ years of underwriting experience.
- Must have FHA DE Underwriter delegation and VA SAR certification.
- Proficient in underwriting FNMA, USDA, and bond loans.
- Encompass experience is preferred but not required.
