Job Description:

Under the general direction of the Director of International Student Services, the Senior International Student Advisor will provide high-quality immigration guidance to international students and promote their full participation and integration into the university community. This position is called upon to interpret internal university policies interfacing with federal immigration regulations affecting international students at LSU and will share the student workload with the international student advising team. This position plays an integral role at LSU by providing high-level advising for international students and promoting their full participation and integration into the university community.

Job Responsibilities:

Serve as Designated School Official (DSO) and an ARO for the Department of Homeland Security and the Department of State's reporting requirements impacting international students.

  • Advise international students on personal, academic, career, social, and cultural matters.
  • In collaboration with other departments and external organizations, assist with providing services and support for international students, and their families.
  • Share the document processing workload with advisors in ISS. This includes pre-arrival immigration forms, SSN, and driver's license requests, among other processes and procedures.
  • Build relationships with academic colleges assigned and provide information on supporting international students.
  • Remain current on relevant immigration regulations and policies impacting the international student population at LSU.
  • Assist with meeting the ongoing reporting and compliance requirements of immigration regulations using the Sunapsis and SEVIS databases.
  • Support programming efforts for new and continuing students.
  • Provide advanced advising in complex cases such as Economic Hardship applications, reinstatement, and Change of Status. 70%
  • Provide recommendations for increasing productivity and data outcomes
  • Assist with maintaining the internal F-1 and J-1 advising manual.
  • Review SEVIS, university, and Sunapsis reports weekly, and follow up with students as needed.
  • Review content in forms, website, communications, and other documentation for students, faculty, staff, and external stakeholders annually and make necessary updates.
  • Lead advising team through exemplary advising practices including regulation and guidance updates and best practices in the field.
  • Participate in campus-wide meetings on behalf of the ISS Director as needed on a broad range of immigration and intercultural issues.
  • Plan, prepare, and deliver workshops, presentations, and other programming related to immigration services for international students.
  • Serve as a leader of the International Student Services team in the absence of the director. 25%
  • Participate in professional development opportunities to enhance knowledge and skills related to international student advising.
  • Other duties as assigned. 5%

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree with 2-4 years of previous Designated School (DSO) Official and Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO) experience.

Specific Experience: Strong knowledge of immigration regulations pertaining to relevant status categories (e.g., F-1, J-1), and familiarity with other immigration classifications.

Technical ability to interface with student information systems such as Workday for students or Mainframe.

Additional Requirements:

FERPA- As with all LSU employees, due to this position title and/or responsibilities, this position has an obligation to assist students in the acquisition of necessary services. Should a student appear in need of or seek assistance with issues of an emotional, behavioral, or mental health related matter they should be referred to the proper service within the Student Health Center. In situations where the student creates an impression that they are a danger to themselves or others, the advisor should immediately contact the Care Team, the Dean of Students or the appropriate law enforcement agency. The employee outside of those rights contained within FERPA should create no impression of client or patient confidentiality.

As mandated by federal regulations, U.S. Citizenship or Lawful Permanent Residence is required to be a Designated School Official (DSO) and Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO) for approval to access Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS)
