Job Summary/Overall Objectives
Assumes administrative responsibility and authority for hospital services during tour of duty, with access to administrative on-call staff for direction/assistance with complex problems. Is responsible for coordinating and supervising activities of nursing personnel and for ensuring that appropriate staffing levels are maintained. The Supervisor Nursing guides personnel in the provision of quality patient care for all age groups and provides direct care as the need presents.
Essential Job Responsibilities

- Act promptly to resolve problems and initiate better ways of doing things by acting as a catalyst for change.
- Establish and maintain a safe working environment and assure staff complies with safety, environmental, and infection control guidelines.
- Equitably apply policies and procedures by issuing corrective action in a fair and consistent manner.
- Assess customer's needs, exceed customer expectations, and consider customers in decision making to improve customer satisfaction.
- Act on most urgent tasks, leverage available resources, review own workload, implement workable systems, and provide clear direction.
- This position has direct supervisory responsibilities and serves as a coach and mentor for other positions in the department.
- Management responsibilities include hiring, coaching, skills development, recognition and rewards, staff productivity and performance management.
- Directs clinical practice activities of nursing staff to ensure that assessment of patients and the care delivered is in accordance with the Nurse Practice Act, the ANA Standards of Clinical Nursing Practice, and other professional standards of care.
- Holds staff accountable for complying with all aspects of the assessment/reassessment process including, but not limited to, age specific needs and pain management.
- Ensures that the care provided is through an interdisciplinary effort that fosters a continuum of patient care that results in desired patient outcomes by making rounds to proactively assess, identify and resolve patient/staff needs and provide interpretation of and direction for the medical and interdisciplinary plan of care.
- Investigate incidents and patient/staff complaints and take action to resolve.
- Responsible, on 3-11, 11-7, weekends and holidays, to triage injury of a hospital employee, provide first aid and complete associated documents and/or direct employee to the ER as needed.
- Provides support to enable staff to initiate/participate in collaborative discussions that results in optimal patient outcomes.
- Ensures that appropriate staffing patterns are maintained by qualified, competent staff, according to department/unit's scope of service.
- Assists with and facilitates an educational process that enhances the provision and coordination of patient care activities to promote and maintain health, foster self-care and improve outcomes.
- Assists with the acquisition of educational materials and application of available resources to meet patient and staff needs.
- Collaborate with physicians and other health care providers to achieve desired patient outcomes and assure continuity of care.
- Maintains open communications with the medical staff and serves as a liaison to answer questions and resolve/address problems/issues.
- Communicates pertinent information to the oncoming shift and to appropriate managers when follow-up action is required.
- Acts to resolve conflict involving Nursing Department staff and other disciplines.
- Coordinates the admission process with the nursing units and other departments/disciplines.
- Coordinates preparation for emergency surgical procedures, procurement of needed medication and acquisition of equipment and supplies necessary for continuity of patient care.
- Responsible for the throughput of all patients by providing bed assignments in a timely fashion as well as providing staffing resources and opening overflow units.
- Participates in a Performance Improvement Process designed to enhance the quality of patient care/customer services as well as the probability of achieving desired patient outcomes.
- Ensures that incident reports/SORs are initiated and provide adequate information related to unexpected outcomes.
- Complies with, and oversees nursing unit compliance with, practices that adhere to infection control policies and promote a safe environment of care as identified by the organization, State, JCAHO, OSHA and other regulatory agencies.
- Demonstrates knowledge of policies and regulations and oversees staff compliance.
- Directs activities of the hospital in emergency situations until relieved.
- Assumes appropriate code team role.
- Provides medication safety through non-punitive reporting system and performance improvement activities.
- Adheres to infection control processes including standard precautions.
- Monitors restraint usage to ensure compliance with hospital policy.
- Involves patient and/or family in safety processes.
- Supports identified safety initiatives, including patient identification processes, use of approved abbreviations, etc.
- Participate in continuous survey readiness for inspections and surveys.
- Managers and processes information received or collected to ensure the quality of patient care provided and improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the documentation process.
- Ensures the security and integrity of patient information.
- Assists the staff in achieving complete, accurate and timely documentation.
- Facilitates access to information, charts and scheduling when other departments are closed to ensure continuity of patient care.
- Ensures that the staff has the resources and ability to access communications
- Other duties as assigned.
Competency and Experience [Knowledge, Skills and Abilities]
Required Qualifications/Experience
- Graduate of an accredited Nursing Program
- Bachelor's or Masters Degree in Nursing or Healthcare Related Specialty and two plus (2+) years of nursing experience.
- Strong leadership ability, good organizational skills, independent and critical thinking skills, sound judgment, and knowledge of legal aspects and liability of nursing practice.
- Strong ability to communicate complex and/or controversial topics and concepts to a wide and diverse audience.
Preferred Qualifications/Experience
- Zero (0) to Two (2) years supervisory/management experience in nursing.
License, Certification & Clearances
- Current licensure to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Pennsylvania.
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) approved curriculum of the American Heart Association (CPR and AED) program.
- Act 33 with renewal
- Act 34 with renewal
- Act 73 FBI Clearance
- Current ACLS or completion within one year of hire/transfer date into department.
Position Type/Expected Hours of Work
- Incumbent will be scheduled based on operational need (rotate shifts, standby, on-call, etc.).
- Travel may be expected locally between System locations.
