The listed minimum pay reflects compensation for a full-time equivalent (1.0 FTE) position. Actual compensation may differ depending on assigned hours and position status (e.g., part-time).

Provides support to histology, cytology and various lab sections through performance of specimen preparation and initial data input, accessioning, maintenance of slides and blocks. Primary support for Bone Marrow collection and assists with FNA collection at the supervisor's instruction. Performs clerical duties, computer system tasks, supply maintenance, specimen transport within the hospital and other duties as required and directed by the Pathology Section Head. Performs selected procedures for hospital inpatients, outpatients. Maintains and catalogs all slides and block archives. Performs procedures accurately and completely, following established patient identification and infection control practices and adhering to established standards and practices for quality assurance. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS Education: High school diploma or equivalent. Associate's degree preferred. Experience: Previous medical experience required. One year related experience in a Pathology or Cytology Laboratory preferred. Other Credentials: Knowledge and Skills: Strong communication and organizational skills. Ability to safely handle blood and body fluids, and preparing specimen for processing. Promotes and delivers optimum satisfaction to customers. Special Training: Familiarity with personal computers. Cytology preparation experience preferred. Mental, Behavioral and Emotional Abilities: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations. Ability to work independently and as a team player. Maintains confidentiality and demonstrates maturity. Usual Work Day: 8 Hours Reporting Relationships Does this position formally supervise employees? No ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Accessions accurately laboratory specimens (pathology and cytology) through the computer LIS system, analyzers, or manually as indicated and prepares specimens for cytologic analysis. Assists with Fine Needle Aspiration and Bone Marrow collection and prepares specimens for processing. Understands collection requirements for special or referral testing, prepares specimens, ensures integrity and accuracy of samples, and arranges for dispatch of specimens. Primary caretaker for block and slides archives and may periodically be asked to assist at the RMC campus. Provides timely distribution of specimens to appropriate laboratory sections. Labels and records all specimen containers and slides accurately. Performs thoroughly all clerical duties as needed, including but not limited to report mailing and inpatient report charting. Performs supply inventory, distribution, and storage and advises the supervisor of supply/equipment needs. Records the daily use of supplies and indicates necessity on a biweekly basis. Organizes and maintains accurately filed slides and blocks. Retrieves slides and blocks as needed. Performs appropriate computer system application techniques to input and retrieve patient information, query test results, print reports, input orders. Performs assigned specimen collection in the OR or CVIR areas obtaining and preparing patient specimens for processing. Assists with cytology specimen preparation. Assists with specimen processing in the gross room and archival of specimens. Assists with morgue maintenance and census. Practices proper infection control techniques. Adheres to established procedures and practices in maintaining accurate specimen identification and tracking. Keeps working area in a clean and organized condition, and demonstrates safe work practices. Performs other duties as needed.
