Job Description
Summary
The Veterinary Technician Supervisor supports the Companion Animal Clinic of the Animal Health Institute by leading and training a team of veterinary technicians. The supervisor is responsible for creating a cohesive team and work environment to assist with meeting the clinic goals and benchmarks. Strong conflict resolution and communication skills are required for the successful supervisor. The Veterinary Technician Supervisor is also involved in direct patient care, customer service and the instruction of students. It is the responsibility of this position to see that patient care, doctor support, and client care are practiced accurately and efficiently by the veterinary technician staff. The position requires advanced technical skills, the ability to communicate with various levels of personnel, the ability to train technicians and students, a strong understanding of teamwork, and a commitment to the education of veterinary students. This position reports to the Manager of the CAC.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Be familiar and able to act on all duties as assigned to a Veterinary Technician position including patient care, recordkeeping, and setting up of surgery and treatment areas.
- Assist in patient care and treatments as designated by workflow or doctor's orders.
- Create staffing schedule for technician team and assign tasks to support workflow of the clinic and ensure completion.
- Oversee veterinary technicians' daily operations and be able to adjust as staffing needs arise.
- Regularly check-in with technician team.
- Assist with team conflict resolution.
- Complete annual performance evaluations and identify and support goals for the technician team.
- Review and submit timecards via designated systems bi-weekly.
- Work with HR on approved leave of absences.
- Address questions or troubleshoot concerns raised by technical staff and elevate issues to management as appropriate.
- Maintain compliance with organizational policies and procedures.
- Collaborate with the leadership team for staff interviews and hiring of technicians.
- Train, orient, and mentor new veterinary technicians in all aspects of the clinic and university culture.
- Identify needs for improvement in patient care and provide necessary training for veterinary technical staff.
- Assist in maintenance of sensitive clinic equipment.
- Identify appropriate CE opportunities for technician team.
- Implement and follow through with performance improvement and progressive discipline.
- Collaborate with clinical leadership team on future projects and impact on staffing needs.
- Act as a patient and student advocate.
- Aide in teaching efforts in conjunction with the faculty.
- Other duties as assigned.
Supervisory Responsibilities
This position will directly supervise a team of veterinary technicians with duties assigned in the Companion Animal Clinic.

Education and/or Experience
High school diploma or GED is required. Must have a minimum of 8 years of experience working in an animal hospital or veterinary clinic setting. CVT certification from the State of Arizona or VTS is required. This individual must demonstrate solid leadership skills, conflict resolution skills, and decision-making skills. A minimum of 3 years in a supervisory role is preferred. Experience working in a team environment with the ability to maintain a professional demeanor while promoting a positive and inclusive culture are essential. Must be detail oriented with strong communication skills.
General Knowledge
- Know the range of services the practice provides and the species it serves.
- Be reasonably familiar with breeds and coat colors.
- Follow OSHA standards. Be able to find Material Safety Data Sheets quickly.
- Know and use standard medical and business abbreviations.
- Use proper medical terminology and spelling when speaking and writing.
- Be familiar with infectious diseases, including their prevention and steps to reduce or eliminate transmission. Know the most common zoonotic diseases (infections from animals to humans).
Computer Skills
The individual must have the ability to learn the StringSoft Veterinary management system, and have basic proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand or sit for long periods. The employee must regularly use hands to handle or feel and reach with hands and arms. The employee is required to stand and walk. Have the physical strength and ability to stand for long periods and be able to lift pets and objects weighing up to 40 pounds without assistance. Assist in lifting patients weighing more than 40 pounds.
