Job Summary
As an HSSE Environmental Manager, you will be responsible and accountable for the daily administration, coordination and implementation of Environmental Compliance under our HSSE Management System for projects and operational sites. This position reports to the Director of HSSE.
The Environmental Manager functions as Environmental Compliance oversight for designated projects. This role reviews Contractor HSSE Environmental Plans for compliance with government regulations, corporate objectives, and industry best practices. The HSSE Environmental Manager conducts assessments of contractor HSSE programs. This role involves collaborating with various internal teams including pre-construction, construction, engineering, asset management, and legal. The role also requires interface with contractor project and operations management, including (sub)contractors and client representatives. Additionally, the HSSE Environmental Manager supports implementing Urban Grid’s HSSE safety programs.
Responsibilities
- Review contractor Stormwater Pollution Prevention Program (SWPPP) and Spill Prevention, Control, and Countermeasure (SPCC) plans and policies to ensure they meet government regulations, corporate objectives, and industry best practices for utility-scale solar farms.
- Assess multiple concurrent projects and collaborate with contractors in the implementation of site HSSE programs with a focus on continuous improvement.
- Ensure contractors follow all obligations for NPDES Permit, SPCC Plan, and HSSE reporting and compliance.
- Interfaces with external agencies and regulatory authorities as needed.
- Oversee, maintain, and train staff on applicable SWPPP, SPCC, and Tier II Reporting protocols.
- Collaborate with development, project management, asset management, and contractor management teams to support contractor Environmental program development.
- Review contractor HSSE incident investigations for completeness, including development of learnings and corrective actions.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Location: Houston, TX or Richmond, VA. The position is hybrid (office/home) with travel up to 50%.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, Political Science/Government, Geography, Economics or other relevant field; or 5 additional years of experience in Environmental Compliance.
- 5+ years’ related experience.
- Knowledge of EPA and state regulations for NPDES and Construction Stormwater Permitting, Spill Prevention, and Tier II Reporting.
- Experience in managing, organizing, coaching, and mentoring contractor HSSE programs for multiple sites.
- Experience in investigating, documenting, and developing corrective actions for accidents, incidents, and near misses.
- External auditing experience and knowledge of EPA and OSHA standards.
- Utility scale solar and BESS project experience preferred.
- Strong leadership skills, with the ability to work successfully across different levels of an organization.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to develop and implement effective solutions to complex problems.
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
