Job Description

Boston Dynamics is a world leader in mobile robots, tackling some of the toughest robotics challenges. For years, our awe-inspiring viral videos on YouTube have shown the world what remarkably capable robots can do. Now we are quickly becoming a recognized leader in automation solutions for industrial applications and warehouse logistics.

As an R&D Repair Technical Specialist at Boston Dynamics, you will be a crucial part of a small, fast-moving robotics team, leading the repair, maintenance, and troubleshooting efforts for our advanced robotic systems, with a strong emphasis on complex electrical systems. You will provide technical leadership, mentor team members, and drive continuous improvement in our repair processes. This role involves hands-on work on prototype electrical system designs, dense electromechanical integrations, and lab building and debugging, ranging from small test systems to fully integrated prototype robots. You must be able to work quickly, adapt to evolving technical challenges, and manage multiple tasks simultaneously.

Day-to-Day Activities

  • Lead and execute the repair and maintenance of complex prototype electromechanical sub-assemblies, including computers, power distribution systems, sensors, embedded data acquisition systems, prototype lithium battery packs, and embedded processors for robotic systems.

  • Troubleshoot and identify root causes of electrical system failures in sub-assemblies and complete robots.

  • Create repair runbooks and procedures with minimal engineering guidance. Identify detailed electrical issues and recommend corrective actions to design engineers.

  • Iterate and improve upon prototype designs in collaboration with design engineers to progress designs from initial prototype toward reproducible assemblies with good quality control.

  • Plan repair equipment, work spaces, and project timelines in coordination with managers and engineers to ensure the environment and equipment necessary to accomplish project goals related to creation and timely repair of prototype robots.

  • Lead the technical aspects of repair projects by offering guidance and support to the team. Facilitate the resolution of challenges by addressing knowledge gaps, providing timely answers to pressing questions, and establishing or optimizing processes to enhance operational efficiency.

  • Collaborate closely with the Manager/Technical Program/Project Manager to define project goals, scope, and requirements. Develop comprehensive work schedules that ensure team members are aligned and aware of their responsibilities and timelines.

  • Foster clear communication among team members, other technical leads, and management. Actively ensure that everyone is on the same page regarding project objectives and expectations, which contributes to maintaining high standards for project completion.

Required Skills

  • Experience with Maintenance and Repair Workflows.

  • Proficiency in repair ticketing or issue management tools such as JIRA.

  • Hands-on experience building and debugging electro-mechanical test setups.

  • Experience with lab equipment including oscilloscopes, power supplies, programmable loads, thermal probes.

  • Experience with communication interfaces, e.g., CAN, Ethernet, SPI, and I2C.

  • Strong ability to multitask and change priorities quickly as needed.

  • Clear and effective communication of test results and data.

  • A deep passion for mentoring and fostering a culture of excellence and best practices.

  • Experience working in a collaborative setting.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills to clearly articulate requirements, expectations, and updates.

  • Exceptional organizational and time management skills to effectively juggle multiple tasks, prioritize workload, and ensure deadlines are met without compromising quality.

Nice to Have

  • Experience with Python, and command-line operations in a UNIX-like OS.

  • Familiarity with position encoder and force sensor technology.

  • Experience working with robots and/or robotic systems.

  • Experience with electric actuators and motors

  • Experience with PCB schematic and layout software such as Altium

  • Experience with PCB rework and cable assembly, especially technically difficult rework.

We are interested in every qualified candidate who is eligible to work in the United States. However, we are not able to sponsor visas for this position.
