The Justice Scholar Program Vera’s Justice Scholar program funds up to 10 New York City high school students for a four-week period in the summer. It is an educational program centered around the concept and practice of justice, and its aim is to draw the attention of students to questions of justice. Each week students will learn about different aspect of the criminal justice system, including its history and the aftereffects of mass incarceration. Students will be encouraged to think critically about what values they believe should be promoted in society and whether our institutions reflect those values. Finally, they will learn about the intersection of race, education, economics and the justice system. The goal of the program is to give students an overview of the criminal justice system and to learn about criminal justice reform through guest speakers, field trips, group projects and class lectures. It will also push students to think critically about the concept of justice and how this concept interacts with major issues in our society, such as racial bias and economic inequality. Finally, we hope the program will develop students writing and analytical skills as well as gain perspective about America’s justice system. Curriculum Overview Each week students will learn about a different stage of the criminal justice system. In the first week, students will learn about the history of the criminal justice system in the United States and about the rise of mass incarceration. In the following weeks, students will learn about life before prison (prosecution), life during prison (incarceration) and life after prison (release) in order to understand the entire chronology of incarceration. Program Schedule The program will start on Monday, July 20th and end on Friday, August 14th. Students will be present for courses, including field trips, Monday through Friday from 9:30 am to 3:00 pm. The Center for Human Development, (CHD) has an immediate need for Juvenile Justice Residential Support Specialists to provide direct care in a short-term residential treatment program for troubled adolescents. The program works closely with the Department of Youth Services (DYS) to ensure that every youth is given a second chance for a better life. Your role as a Juvenile Justice Residential Support Specialist : The Juvenile Justice Residential Support Specialist is primarily responsible for the care and supervision of residents at the CHD- Adolescent Treatment in all facets (including physical, mental, emotional, social and spiritual well-being) of their daily lives. The Residential Support Specialist will supervise and manage the behavior, activities and movement of program residents including in the community during sanctioned events. Additionally, they would monitor and provide recreational activities; will conduct group meetings; and provide counseling and advocacy for residents. Lastly, they will engage in household activities with residents, where needed, such as housekeeping, laundry, etc., and will provide client transport when appropriate. REQUIRMENTS: High School Diploma or Equivalent required Must have a vehicle for work use and current driver's license Ability to complete medication administration training All candidates must complete and pass background record screening process Must be comfortable working in a locked facility Must be able to attend a 3 weeks of DYS basic training academy during the day (8:30am - 5pm) upon hire. Previous experience in a secure setting is preferred. We are looking for staff that can work a second shift schedule from 3pm-11pm with flexibility to work weekends. Our Studio Justice program invites young people to imagine and design future communities rooted in equity, sustainability, and creativity.
Position Overview:We are seeking a Cohort Engagement Instructor (CE Instructor) to support the Oregon-based Studio Justice cohort. This role is ideal for someone who excels in communication, coordination, and youth engagement, and who is passionate about creating inclusive, affirming spaces for young people.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Support internal and external communications with cohort participants, parents, guest speakers, panelists, and team members
  • Coordinate logistics for guest professionals and visitors
  • Lead and support 8-9 week cohort engagement activities for 15–18 youth (ages 14–20)
  • Cultivate a positive and affirming culture that encourages creativity and community visioning
  • Teach and model Studio Justice program values, including restorative justice practices
  • Work under the guidance of the Lead Instructor and Program Administrator
Qualifications:
  • High School Graduate, or GED completion
  • Experience designing and implementing curriculum and programing for youth ages 14 – 20
  • Strong communication and organizational skills
  • Experience working with youth in educational or community settings
  • Ability to manage multiple relationships and logistics with professionalism
  • Familiarity with restorative justice and youth development principles
  • Proficiency with, or willingness to learn, Zoom, Adobe Acrobat, Google applications such as gmail, drive, docs, sheets, slides, forms, etc.
  • Presentation and instructional software such as Miro and Sketchup
  • Must be able to pass a background check as required by the Oregon Department of Education for positions working directly with youth and have a clean driving record in the previous year
