Job Description
Neonatologist (MD/DO)
Position Summary
The Neonatologist provides comprehensive medical care to premature, critically ill, and medically complex newborns in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) and related newborn care settings. This role focuses on advanced clinical management, family-centered care, and collaboration with multidisciplinary teams to optimize outcomes for neonates.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Provide direct medical care to neonates in the NICU, including premature and critically ill infants
- Perform comprehensive neonatal assessments, daily rounds, and ongoing management
- Diagnose and manage complex neonatal conditions such as respiratory distress, sepsis, congenital anomalies, and metabolic disorders
- Develop and implement evidence-based treatment plans
- Supervise neonatal resuscitation and stabilization in the delivery room
- Interpret diagnostic studies including laboratory results, imaging, and blood gases
- Manage respiratory support including mechanical ventilation and noninvasive modalities
- Coordinate care with neonatal nurse practitioners, physician assistants, nurses, respiratory therapists, and pediatric subspecialists
- Communicate effectively with families regarding clinical status, care plans, and prognosis
- Participate in quality improvement, patient safety, and outcomes initiatives
- Supervise and educate residents, fellows, medical students, and advanced practice providers
- Maintain accurate and timely clinical documentation
- Participate in on-call coverage for neonatal services
- Comply with all regulatory, accreditation, and professional standards
Qualifications
- Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) from an accredited medical school
- Completion of an accredited Pediatrics residency program
- Completion of an accredited Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine fellowship
- Board-eligible or board-certified in Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine
- Ability to obtain and maintain unrestricted state medical licensure
- DEA registration or eligibility

- Commitment to evidence-based, patient-centered care
Work Environment
- Neonatal intensive care units, delivery rooms, and newborn nurseries
- Schedule may include day, night, weekend, and on-call coverage depending on program structure
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand, walk, and move throughout clinical environments
- Manual dexterity for neonatal procedures and resuscitation
- Visual and auditory acuity sufficient for patient monitoring and clinical assessment
