Job Description

Radiation Therapy Medical Physicist to join the Radiation Oncology team at Naval Medical Center Portsmouth, VA.
This position plays a key role in treatment planning, quality assurance, equipment calibration, and the overall safety and accuracy of radiation delivery to patients. The ideal candidate will have strong technical knowledge and a collaborative approach to patient care.

Qualifications

Education:

  • Master’s or Doctorate in Physics, Medical Physics, Engineering, Applied Mathematics, or a related physical science

  • Must meet American College of Radiation Oncology standards for supporting CT systems

Experience:

  • At least 3 years of experience within the last 5 years as a Therapeutic Medical Physicist in a hospital setting

  • Minimum of 1 year within the last 3 years supporting Stereotactic Radiosurgery (SRS) and Stereotactic Body Radiotherapy (SBRT)

Certification (must be certified or eligible for certification):

  • American Board of Medical Physics (Radiation Oncology Physics)

  • American Board of Radiology (Therapeutic Radiological Physics or Radiological Physics), or

  • Canadian College of Physicists in Medicine

Licensure:

  • Must have been listed as an Authorized Medical Physicist on a Nuclear Regulatory Commission license within the past 5 years


Schedule 

  • Monday to Friday, 40hrs per week between 6:30 AM and 6:30 PM

  • Shared on-call coverage


Key Responsibilities

  • Analyze and validate radiation beam data for treatment machines

  • Ensure accuracy of treatment planning data used by therapists, dosimetrists, and oncologists

  • Support treatment planning for 3D-CRT, IMRT, VMAT, SBRT, and SRS procedures

  • Conduct quality assurance checks after equipment maintenance

  • Provide training and support to clinical staff and residents

  • Assist in the development of radiation safety and quality assurance protocols

  • Attend weekly chart rounds and CQI meetings

  • Support data management systems and participate in clinical duties as assigned
