Laboratory Technician

Definition and Role

The Laboratory Technician will be responsible for processing medically relevant biological samples through extraction or high throughput DNA sequencing assays. This role will work within a clinical laboratory team in a fast-paced, high production setting to process research and clinical diagnostic samples to provide a test result to patients, oncologists and other health care providers and researchers. As such, high attention to detail and clinical mindedness are crucial to success in this role. This position will report directory to the Laboratory Supervisor and/or the Chief Operating Officer.

Job Responsibilities and Duties

• Perform DNA extractions, PCR amplification or high-throughput sequencing assays on DNA libraries.
• Perform protocols under compliance with regulatory agencies, model appropriate clinical, regulatory and safety practices.
• Keep accurate and detailed records for all workflows following Good Documentation Practices.
• Operate and maintain laboratory equipment such as liquid handling robotics and DNA sequencers.
• Enter and track data in a laboratory information database.
• Receive, label and analyze samples (blood, toxic, tissue etc.)
• Design and execute laboratory testing according standard procedures, make observations and interpret findings
• Conduct experiments under defined conditions to verify/reject various types of hypotheses using refined scientific methods
• Organize and store all chemicals substances, fluids and compressed gases according to safety instructions
• Record all data and results in specified forms (paper and electronic) with accuracy and responsibility
• Maintain equipment and assist in ordering laboratory supplies
• Ensure that all safety guidelines are followed strictly at all times and maintain a clean and orderly environment
• Ensure compliance with lab regulatory agencies (GxP, FDA, ISO).
• Exhibit clear and effective communication to facilitate effective handoff procedures.
• Record non-conformances for all appropriate errors.
• Lead by example and model appropriate cultural and professional behavior.
• Provide coverage for staff absences in collaboration with supervisory staff and team leads
• Works collaboratively under the direct supervision of a licensed nurse
• Attends and participates in meetings upon request, and continuing education.
• Ability to communicate, work effectively and interact well with providers, colleagues and other healthcare professionals and maintain employee and patient confidentiality at all times in written, verbal, and electronic information.
• Assists Provider and professional staff with equipment and supply set up and reports any defect or compromise in a timely manner
• Able to respect and maintain patient confidentiality
• Demonstrates the ability to be effective, flexible, well organized and function well under stressful situations
• Adheres to OSHA standards with regard to infection control & blood borne pathogens
• Attends annual review and department in-services as scheduled
• Reports to work on time and scheduled and completes work within designated times as directed
• Adheres to dress code and wears identification while on duty
• Represents MedCentris in a positive and professional manner
• Responds quickly and appropriately to supervisor’s request and carry out assignments with little need for direction
• Any and all other duties assigned/requested by your direct supervisor.

Qualifications

• A 2-, 3-, or 4-year degree in science related studies, with at least one year of experience working in a high-complexity clinical molecular laboratory.
• Valid laboratory technician license preferred, MLT certification is acceptable.
• Experience in operating electrical and nonelectrical laboratory equipment and potentially dangerous substances (flammable liquids, infectious bacteria, biohazards etc.)
• Molecular biology skills (e.g., DNA Extraction, Purification, PCR, qPCR, next-generation DNA sequencing) and related technical knowledge.
• Competent with laboratory automation and demonstrated laboratory best practices.
• Experience working with human blood, tissues and/or cells as well as proper handling of biohazardous material.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills, ability to collaborate across teams and disciplines.

Preferred

• ASCP(MB) certification
• In depth knowledge of QHSE Systems, preventative measures, and laboratory best practices

Physical Requirements

• Mobility and Lifting: Frequent sitting for extended periods of time; frequent standing; frequent lifting up to 25 pounds.
• Visual: Constant ability to read information, including close up; constant ability to use a computer screen; frequent use of good overall vision, including color perception.
• Dexterity: Constant eye and hand coordination and manual dexterity to write, operate a computer keyboard and finely manipulate small objects.
• Emotional/Psychological: Constant ability to make decisions and concentrate.
