Job Description

SUMMARYThe Accounting Manager is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the Accounting Department, ensuring the integrity of the agency's financial records, and supervising accounting functions including the general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, cash receipts, fixed assets, and financial reporting. This position is responsible for maintaining strong internal controls, ensuring compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), applicable laws and regulations, grant and contractual requirements, and agency policies. The Accounting Manager supervises accounting staff, coordinates the annual financial audit, supports budgeting and financial reporting activities, and assists the Vice President Finance with strategic financial initiatives.The Accounting Manager reports directly to the Vice President Finance.This position is classified as exempt from the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESThe following duties and responsibilities are given as examples of the various types of work performed in this position.  Other duties and responsibilities may be assigned.
  1. Supervises the daily operations of the Accounting Department, including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, cash receipts, payroll accounting support, fixed assets, and financial reporting functions.
  2. Oversees the monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close processes to ensure timely and accurate financial reporting.
  3. Reviews and approves journal entries, account reconciliations, and accounting transactions for accuracy, completeness, proper authorization, and compliance with agency policies and accounting standards.
  4. Ensures all balance sheet accounts are reconciled on a timely basis and outstanding reconciling items are appropriately investigated and resolved including clearing accounts on a weekly basis.
  5. Maintains the agency's fixed asset accounting records, including additions, disposals, depreciation, physical inventory coordination, and reconciliation of subsidiary records to the general ledger.
  6. Oversees accounts receivable processes, including contract billing, program revenue, third-party reimbursements, camp income, and collection activities.
  7. Oversees accounts payable processes to ensure timely payment of agency obligations and compliance with internal approval procedures.
  8. Assists the Vice President Finance in developing, implementing, and maintaining accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls designed to safeguard agency assets and ensure accurate financial reporting.
  9. Coordinates and prepares schedules, documentation, and supporting information required for the annual financial statement audit, compliance audits, Single Audit, grant audits, and other regulatory examinations.
  10. Assists with preparation of financial reports for management, Board of Directors, granting agencies, and regulatory organizations.
  11. Monitors compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), agency policies, grant requirements, donor restrictions, and applicable federal and state regulations.
  12. Assists with preparation of the annual operating budget and monitors budget-to-actual financial performance.
  13. Supervises, trains, coaches, and evaluates accounting staff while promoting professional development, accountability, customer service, and teamwork.
  14. Ensures adequate cross-training and continuity of operations within the Accounting Department.
  15. Identifies opportunities to improve accounting processes, automation, workflow efficiencies, and internal controls.
  16. Assists with implementation and maintenance of accounting software systems and financial reporting tools.
  17. Provides financial guidance and accounting support to agency departments.
  18. Performs financial analysis and special projects as assigned by the Vice President Finance.
  19. Performs other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTSBachelor's degree in Accounting required. Five (5) years of progressively responsible professional accounting experience, including supervisory experience, is preferred. Equivalent combinations of education, certifications, and professional accounting experience that provide the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered. Experience with nonprofit accounting, grant accounting, Blackbaud Financial Edge, and Microsoft Excel is strongly preferred.REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIESTo perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each area of responsibility satisfactorily.   6. Must have a good working knowledge of PC’s and Windows-based software and be proficient in Microsoft Excel.
  1.     Must have a valid Driver License and be able to maintain a safe driving record consistent with agency policy.
  1. Thorough knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
  1. Knowledge of nonprofit accounting principles, fund accounting, and grant compliance.
  1. Knowledge of internal controls and financial reporting best practices.
  1. Ability to analyze complex financial information and prepare detailed financial reports.
  1. Ability to supervise, coach, and develop staff.
  1. Ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive financial information.
  1. Ability to manage multiple priorities while meeting strict deadlines.
  1. Strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills. Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Excel and accounting software. Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Job Type: Full-Time

Pay: 62,000.00 Annually
