About MHP Structural Engineers
MHP Structural Engineers is a 48-person structural engineering consulting firm founded in 1973. We provide structural engineering services to a diverse clientele, including architects and building owners throughout California. Our corporate headquarters is located in Long Beach, with an additional office in San Diego.
This position is currently held by a long-tenured team member who plans to retire in 2026. There will be several months of overlap to ensure a smooth transition and comprehensive training on MHP's processes and clients.

This is a full-time, in-office position in Long Beach, with some flexibility for limited remote work.
Position Overview
The Accounting Manager is responsible for all day-to-day accounting and financial reporting functions of the company. This role is critical to MHP's financial success, ensuring accurate and timely reporting of cash inflows and outflows to support executive decision-making.
We are seeking a hands-on, detail-oriented professional who thrives in a collaborative professional services environment.
Primary Responsibilities
Daily
- Accounts receivable (A/R) and accounts payable (A/P)
- General ledger management
- Cash management
- Responding to client and employee accounting inquiries
- Verifying billing terms for new projects
Weekly
- Cash collections (A/R follow-up)
- Banking activities and remote deposits
Monthly
- Financial reporting and preparation of monthly financial statements
- Bi-monthly payroll processing
- Project billing
- Benefit accruals and cash reporting
- Employee expense report review and reimbursement
- Vendor payments
Annual
- Preparation of tax return schedules and coordination with external CPA
- Corporate filings and 1099 preparation
- Preparation of financial reports and data for annual Management Planning Meeting
Requirements
- Strong understanding of GAAP, including both cash and accrual accounting
- Experience preparing financial statements and maintaining internal controls
- Advanced proficiency in ERP systems and Microsoft Excel (including pivot tables and financial analysis tools)
- Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills
- Ability to manage multiple responsibilities accurately and on time
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills; ability to interact effectively with clients, vendors, and senior leadership
- High integrity, dependability, and results orientation
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance
- 7+ years of accounting experience
- Minimum 3 years in a supervisory role and/or managing a similar accounting department
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with Deltek Vision or Vantagepoint
- Experience in Architecture, Engineering, or other professional services industries
- Public accounting background (Big 4 or mid-tier firm)
- CPA certification
