Job Description

The University of St. Thomas (UST), a private Catholic University committed to the liberal arts and the religious and intellectual tradition of Catholic higher education, located in Houston, Texas, near the vibrant central business district, Texas Medical Center, and museum district, is seeking applicants for an adjunct faculty position in the Criminology, Law and Society Department to teach courses as needed throughout the academic year, including summer.

Job Summary:

Adjunct Instructor for Criminology, Law, and Society courses. The courses are offered during the day, evening, and/or online.

Minimum Qualifications:

Master's degree required with a minimum of 18 graduate hours in Criminal Justice, Criminology, or Administration of Justice. At least three years of full-time experience working in the criminal justice system or an NGO with emphasis on criminal justice.

Preferred Qualifications:

Ph.D. in Criminal Justice, Administration of Justice, Criminology, or a degree in Jurisprudence. Teaching experience in a university or two-year college.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Teaches Criminology, Law, and Society courses at a variety of times and platforms.
  • Creates engaging lessons that promote student involvement and application of the material.
  • Submits required college reports and forms in a timely manner
  • Utilizes a course syllabus for each course, following established institutional guidelines
  • Meets with and advises students either before or after class or by appointment, electronic communication, or other appropriate methods
  • Evaluates students to measure their progress in achieving course objectives and informs students in a timely manner of their progress
  • Maintain professional relationships with students, colleagues, and the community
  • Attends meetings, training, and orientations as required
  • Responsible for other reasonable, related duties as assigned
  • Comfortable in the use of Blackboard and PowerPoint as an instructor

  • Mastery of assigned course content
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and interpersonal skills
  • Commitment to Catholic Social Justice; Ability to appreciate alternative viewpoints; Ability to work effectively with a wide variety of individuals
  • Demonstrates interest in interdisciplinary teaching, service learning, learning technologies, course development, and adult learning methodologies, including collaborative learning, learning communities, and distance learning
  • Commitment to academic excellence, exceptional service, and providing a dynamic climate for life-long learning
