SUMMARY
The Career Navigator will work directly with all the AO-K (Accelerating Opportunities-Kansas) participants to provide one-on-one educational and career guidance, connect students with the necessary resources, act as a guide to using the college systems and services, and prepare students for active job search, application, and selection processes. This position is funded through grant monies and is subject to the availability of funds. This position will assist the Program Director in any way which is needed to maintain an efficient Adult Education program. This position will involve travel between Hiawatha, Western Center and Marysville.
This part-time position (no more than 28 hours per week and 42 weeks per year) will pay $19 per hour. The selected candidate will participate in the Kansas Public Employee Retirement System (KPERS). There are no other benefits associated with this position. This is a grant-fund position.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
- Serve as an instructor by performing the following activities:
a. Assist students in the enrollment process.
b. Assess ABE Instructors to determine entry level and on-going progress.
c. Assist in developing a plan for each student based on pre-test scores, course objectives and student goals.
d. Work closely with adult education coordinator, advisors, and admissions staff to recruit hard-to-reach trainees and orient them to the career pathways.
e. Foster collaborations with local employers, community service agencies, Workforce One, Inc., Department of Children and Families, the college Disability Coordinator, and the Financial Aid Representative to support trainees throughout their training through employment.
f. Provide academic support for other pre-college or college classes.
g. Provide transition courses for adult learners.
- Evaluate the performance of the students throughout the course by means of further testing and make
modifications when necessary.
Consult with the HCC Adult Education Program Director for questions related to the program.
Recruitment and Retention Activities:
a. Provide information about programs within the community and serve as a local contact person.
b. Provide ongoing goal setting meetings with students, communicate with the college staff for
transition, share information about available support services, and make referrals.
c. Contact students who are not attending regularly and encourage their continued participation and attendance, document policy violations, and create opportunities for students to access information about college policies.
- Maintenance Activities:
a. Keep detailed and accurate records and submit necessary information to the HCC Adult Education Program Director. Follow up and make revisions to records as requested.
b. Keep records of materials and information received from the Director and share with tutors and students.
c. Assist students with GED enrollment, college enrollment or other transition services.
- Program Involvement and Development Activities
a. Be a member of the Kansas Adult Education Association (KAEA).
b. Attend Adult Education Staff Development on the State and local level.
c. Help develop and promote literacy at the local level.
