Job Description

The Agronomy Test Plot Technician is responsible for establishing, maintaining, and harvesting agricultural research plots used to evaluate seed genetics, crop protection products, fertility programs, and agronomic practices. This hands-on role supports research and product development by ensuring accurate trial implementation, equipment operation, data collection, and plot maintenance. The ideal candidate enjoys working outdoors, has strong attention to detail, and is passionate about agriculture and crop production.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist with planning, planting, maintaining, and harvesting agronomic research plots.
  • Operate and maintain research equipment including planters, sprayers, combines, tractors, UTVs, and other field equipment.
  • Calibrate planting, spraying, and harvesting equipment to ensure accurate trial execution.
  • Apply crop protection products and fertilizers according to research protocols.
  • Scout plots throughout the growing season for emergence, plant health, insects, diseases, nutrient deficiencies, weeds, and environmental stress.
  • Collect and record accurate agronomic data including stand counts, plant height, flowering dates, disease ratings, yield data, moisture, and other research observations.
  • Maintain detailed records using electronic data collection software and spreadsheets.
  • Assist with plot layout, GPS guidance systems, mapping, signage, and plot identification.
  • Prepare seed, chemicals, and research materials for field trials.
  • Perform preventative maintenance and repairs on research equipment.
  • Ensure all research activities comply with company protocols, safety standards, and regulatory requirements.
  • Assist with field days, customer demonstrations, and agronomy events as needed.
  • Maintain clean, organized facilities, equipment, and research storage areas.
  • Travel to research locations as required.

Qualifications

  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Agronomy, Crop Science, Agriculture, Plant Science, or a related field preferred.
  • Previous experience in crop production, research, agronomy operations, seed production, or agricultural equipment operation is preferred.
  • Experience operating tractors, sprayers, planters, combines, and other farm equipment is a plus.
  • Knowledge of corn, soybean, wheat, or other row crop production practices.
  • Mechanical aptitude with the ability to troubleshoot and perform routine equipment maintenance.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to accurately collect and manage research data.
  • Basic computer skills including Microsoft Office; experience with precision agriculture or research software is beneficial.
  • Valid driver's license required; CDL and pesticide applicator license are preferred or willingness to obtain.
