Job Description

Celanese Engineered Materials delivers a broad range of technology-based products and solutions to the transportation, aerospace, electronics, healthcare, industrial and consumer markets. With over 400 employees, the Washington Works site in Parkersburg, WV is one of Celanese’s largest manufacturing locations within the EM business producing a broad array of polymers which are distributed globally. 

This Analytical Chemist, Quality position will be responsible for supporting analytical testing methods and equipment while developing strategies and systems to improve analytical capabilities.

The individual should have a good understanding of general chemistry, analytical chemistry, organic chemistry, and polymer chemistry. A successful candidate should have some experience in thermal or rheology analysis, spectroscopy, microscopy, chromatography, or wet chemistry. The individual should be able to handle common lab chemicals safely. Some instrument maintenance experience to do basic troubleshooting is preferred. The candidate should be skilled with MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Knowledge of Sample Manager and SAP is also desirable.  This position requires good technical writing skills to produce high quality reports with good data analysis in a timely manner. The individual will work in a team environment to solve complex projects/problems with business impact. A strong sense of safety and urgency is required for the position. They will need a strong respect for lab safety and wet chemical handling, and strong knowledge in this area to be able to safely perform non-routine testing. 

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct work activities and demonstrate leadership behavior consistent with Celanese Core Values.
  • Use analytical expertise to ensure facility and personal adherence to regulatory, company policies, and good manufacturing practices.
  • Work closely with lab management to develop strategies and systems that improve analytical performance (safety, test variation, efficiency, technology improvement, product development).
  • Monitor analytical equipment performance; assessing reliability of equipment, identifying failures and causes of failures, and recommending solutions.
  • Mentoring and influential leadership of lab resources 
  • Work with Commercial and Quality teams to respond to customer inquiries and/or quality notifications. 
  • Work with other onsite businesses to respond to site issues or inquiries
  • Interface with R&D and Commercial resources to develop innovations and coordinate analytical methods across the business 
  • Develop, maintain, and improve analytical methods  

Qualifications:

  • B.S. in chemistry or related discipline. 
  • Two or more years of experience in chemical, polymers, or energy related fields is preferred
  • Hands on capability and interpretation skills in thermal, rheology, spectroscopy, chromatography, microscopy, or wet chemistry.
  • High comfort level with analytical instrumentation, including instrument maintenance, troubleshooting, and minor repairs.
  • Effective communication, both verbal and written, especially in technical writing. Proficient with MS Office.
  • Strong understanding and commitment to safe lab practices and chemical handling.
  • Ability to organize, keep detailed documentation/records, and achieve timely, accurate results.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and be part of the team.
  • Must strive for continuous improvement and be eager to learn new disciplines.
  • Must be energetic, self-motivated, and a quick learner.
