Job Overview
We are seeking experienced Archaeological Crew Chiefs for a large cultural resource survey supporting a power-generation and data-center development outside Fort Stockton, Texas. The project area covers approximately 90,000 acres.
Crew Chiefs will supervise field technicians during an initial 12-day survey session in August covering approximately 7,000–10,000 acres. The project is expected to resume in November and continue for approximately seven to eight months.
Responsibilities
- Lead and supervise an assigned archaeological field crew
- Coordinate daily pedestrian survey, shovel testing and site-recording activities
- Assign work and monitor crew productivity, documentation and safety
- Ensure technicians complete approximately 10 shovel tests per day when field conditions permit
- Review field forms, site records, photographs, GPS data and maps for accuracy
- Identify archaeological resources and guide site delineation and documentation
- Train technicians on regional artifact identification, soils and field procedures
- Communicate daily progress, discoveries, safety concerns and staffing needs to project leadership
- Operate a company-arranged rental vehicle and transport assigned crew members
- Ensure the crew follows project, client and regulatory requirements
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in archaeology, anthropology or a closely related field required; graduate degree preferred
- Several years of archaeological field experience
- Previous experience as a Crew Chief, Field Director or equivalent archaeological field leader required
- Strong experience with pedestrian survey, shovel testing, site recording and crew supervision
- West Texas, New Mexico or broader Southwest experience strongly preferred
- Knowledge of regional archaeological resources, soils and artifact types
- Strong field documentation, communication and quality-control skills
- Ability to manage a crew in remote and physically demanding conditions
- Valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record required
- Ability to work overtime and an extended rotation schedule
Project Schedule
The initial assignment will last approximately 12 days in August. The project is anticipated to resume in November on a 10-days-on, four-days-off rotation with approximately 10-hour workdays. The long-term phase is expected to last seven to eight months.
