POSITION OVERVIEWThe Art Instructor is responsible for leading a safe, engaging, and supportive after-school classroom environment for high school students through visual arts instruction, facilitation, and program coordination. This role focuses on working with 9th–12th grade students, fostering creativity, self-expression, and skill development through a variety of visual art mediums such as drawing, painting, and mixed media.

As a part-time instructor, you will design and deliver age-appropriate visual arts activities, build positive relationships with teens, and create an inclusive space that encourages participation, artistic exploration, and confidence in creative expression. This position offers valuable professional development and personal growth opportunities through hands-on experience working with youth in an after-school setting.

The Art Instructor reports to the Creative Tech Lead and collaborates with site staff to ensure a high-quality program experience.

ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead and manage a classroom of approximately 10–20 high school students in a safe, engaging, and structured after-school environment
  • Plan, adapt, and deliver visual arts enrichment lessons that support creativity, skill-building, and self-expression
  • Facilitate life skills and team-building activities that promote collaboration, confidence, and positive youth development
  • Engage in weekly check-ins and participate in staff meetings
  • Maintain a positive, safe, productive work environment  
  • Participate in supporting special events and field trips  
  • Attend training and professional development opportunities 
  • Perform additional relevant duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Commitment to BGCP’s mission and vision and working with high school youth 
  • Experience building relationships with diverse youth communities and constituents  
  • Ability to motivate through positive reinforcement  
  • Strong communication skills  
  • Flexible in navigating a fast-paced environment  
  • Preferred one year of experience working with high school aged youth 
  • Spanish fluency is a plus

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORK ENVIRONMENTThe usual and customary methods of performing the job’s functions require the following physical demands: occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; some climbing and balancing; and some stooping, kneeling, bending at the waist, reaching overhead, crouching, squatting, and/or crawling. The role also requires significant fine finger dexterity and near vision acuity. The position may occasionally involve lifting or carrying objects up to 25 pounds. Generally, the job requires approximately 20% sitting and 80% walking or standing. The work environment noise level is typically moderate but may occasionally be louder. All requirements are subject to reasonable accommodations.

Redwood City, CA

WORK SCHEDULE

  • Monday through Friday 2:30pm- 7:00pm (25-29 hours/week) with occasional Saturdays (9/5, 9/12, 9/19, 9/26, 10/3, 10/10, 10/17, 11/7, 11/14, 11/21)

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS

  • Employment Status: Part Time- Non-Exempt
  • Pay Range: $25.00 - $30.00, depending on experience (DOE)
  • Retirement Benefits: BGCP offers salary contributions to the 401(k) plan
  • Sick Time: Part-time employees accrue sick time at a rate of 1 hour for every 20 hours worked, and may use up to 40 hours per year

As part of the hiring process, BGCP requires candidates to complete a LiveScan fingerprinting, background check, and tuberculosis (TB) evaluation or test.
