Job Description

Art Studio Manager

Position Summary and Qualifications:

The Department of Art and Art History seeks a studio manager. This is a full-time 12-month, 5 day/week position. This position would liaise with Art and Art History faculty and students providing technical support to the Department through, budget management, inventory and distribution of studio supplies, and performing equipment maintenance across three buildings- Boland Hall, Toland Hall, and Fine Arts East. This position includes oversight of photography (digital and darkroom), ceramics, sculpture, painting, and drawing studios and art history classrooms.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Oversees the ordering and receiving of supplies

  • Works with chair and administrative assistant to oversee budget

  • Oversees the hiring, managing and training of student workers who run labs 6 days/week

  • Oversees the maintenance of 3 art buildings and liaises with facilities management staff and housekeeping

  • Oversees routine cleaning and organizing of the studio spaces

  • Works with the chemical hygiene officer for disposal of hazardous waste materials from all studios

  • From time to time the studio manager may be required to build storage shelving, tables, and rigging.

  • Open to learning new equipment and software as needed

Medium-specific Duties & Responsibilities:

Photography Studio

  • Manage all supplies and equipment (cameras, tripods, etc), including their distribution and collection to students throughout the semester

  • Maintain and service digital photography scanners and printers.

  • Maintain darkroom equipment and chemicals

Ceramics Studio 

  • Manage all equipment, including kilns, pottery wheels, and sinks.  

  • Load, fire, and unload kilns on a regular basis.  Oversee clay reclamation.

  • Perform routine maintenance on kilns.  

Drawing and Painting

  • Order and inventory drawing, painting supplies, keeping studio appropriately supplied and supplies adequately stored and available. 

  • Assist administrative assistant with organizing and hiring of studio models.

Sculpture

  • Order and distribute inventory

  • Train Federal Work Studies on laser cutter and 3D printing, and woodshop equipment (band saws, drill presses and circular saws). 

Minimum Qualifications:

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree

  • Highly organized and capable of creating systems that will enhance efficiency on all levels of studio management

  • Several years of experience in art or relevant creative field

  • Some photography experience with cameras and inkjet printers

  • Proficiency in Mac OSX, Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and google drive

  • Effective and professional written and oral/phone communication

  • Customer service attitude; interact respectfully with a wide range of people

  • Schedule must be flexible

Preferred

  • Experience with photographic equipment

  • Experience with digital printing utilizing Epson and Canon printers

  • Experience with kiln maintenance and ceramic skills

  • Experience with woodworking tools. Including but not limited to table saws, band saws, and circular saws. Familiarity with building functional items, like shelving, and storage cabinets.

  • Experience with Laser cutting and 3D printing

Physical Requirements and/or Unusual Work Hours:

  • Some evening and/or weekend hours

  • Frequent heavy lifting of supplies and equipment

Pay Transparency:

The estimated pay range for this position is $57,000-$60,000 annually. The offered salary will be commensurate with work experience and educational background.
