Position Information

The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) School of Veterinary Medicine invites applications for the position of Assistant/Associate Professor- Director of Large Animal Ambulatory Services. This full-time faculty position provides strategic leadership for the development, implementation, and oversight of comprehensive large animal ambulatory clinical services supporting the new Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) program. Consistent with UMES's land-grant mission, this position integrates clinical service, teaching, scholarship, and veterinary extension/outreach activities to promote animal health, agricultural sustainability, public health, and economic vitality across Maryland and the Delmarva Peninsula.

Salary Information

Salary range: $135,000 - $180,000 annually, commensurate with academic rank and experience.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership and management for large animal and ambulatory

clinical services, including operational oversight and quality assurance.

  • Deliver high-quality veterinary medical care in food animal and equine field-

based settings.

  • Provide clinical instruction and supervision of DVM students in ambulatory

and large animal practice environments.

  • Develop and implement clinical protocols, safety procedures, and service

standards.

  • Engage in veterinary extension and outreach activities, including producer

education, herd health consultation, continuing education programs, and

collaboration with UMES Extension.

  • Build and maintain partnerships with regional producers, practitioners,

agricultural organizations, and government agencies.

  • Participate in accreditation activities, faculty governance, scholarship, and

institutional service consistent with rank and appointment.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or equivalent degree from an AVMA-

accredited (or equivalent) institution.

  • Eligibility for veterinary licensure in the State of Maryland.
  • Significant clinical experience in large animal veterinary practice (food

animal and/or equine).

  • Demonstrated commitment to veterinary education and student

mentorship.

  • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.

Preferences: (Qualifications)

  • Board certification or advanced graduate training (e.g., DACVIM, DACVS,

DABVP, MS, PhD).

  • Evidence of leadership in clinical service development or program

management.

  • Experience leading or developing ambulatory or field-based clinical

programs.

  • Experience in veterinary extension, producer education, or applied herd

health consultation.

  • Familiarity with AVMA Council on Education (COE) accreditation standards.
  • Record of scholarship appropriate to academic rank.
  • Experience working with food animal systems, equine enterprises, and/or

underserved rural communities.

Working Conditions

This position involves extensive field-based work in farm and ambulatory settings. The incumbent must be able to perform essential physical functions associated with large animal veterinary practice and work flexible hours, including participation in emergency service coverage as needed.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Demonstrate knowledge and experience specifically in regard to veterinary

medical education.

  • Demonstrate excellent communication skills and established experience in

public speaking and writing.

  • Demonstrate proficiency and professionalism in video conferencing,

speaking, and teaching.

  • Demonstrate proficiency in the use of computers, electronics, and software

commensurate with the modern work environment.

  • Possess strong customer service skills.

Physical Demands:

  • May require extended periods of standing, bending, stooping, sitting at

desk.

  • May require lifting.
  • Requires communication with a variety of constituents externally and

internally.

  • Requires operation of a variety of office equipment.
