Job Summary:

Assistant, Associate, or Full Clinical Professor of Law (tenure-track or non-tenure-track), Director of the Immigration ClinicThe University of Mississippi School of Law invites applicants with a passion for immigration law, including both teaching and representing live clients with immigration-associated legal issues, to establish and direct an Immigration Clinic. The Clinic’s mission will be to train students to protect the rights of both our local and state-wide immigrant community, and to engage in public service lawyering in the immigration policy field.

Job Description:

The Director’s status may either be tenure-track or long-term contract. The Director and the Law School Dean will reach a decision based upon the Director’s desire, the Clinc’s specific needs, as well as the Law School’s administrative and pedagogical needs. The position will be a twelve-month appointment. The Director’s primary responsibilities will include managing caseload, selecting cases, litigating cases, supervising students, and administering all aspects of the Clinic, including managing the Clinic budget and supervising Clinic staff. The successful candidate for Director will achieve excellence in some or all of the following, depending on the specific scope of contractual employment: scholarship, teaching, public advocacy, and service to the Law School and community consistent with his or her clinical responsibilities.

We seek applicants with demonstrated accomplishments in immigration-related litigation, including some or all of the following: representing immigrants in removal proceedings, immigration-related complex federal litigation, representing asylees in asylum cases, and contributions to immigration policy and community education projects within their local communities. The Director should be prepared to partnerwith local, regional, and national civil rights and immigration-focused organizations, many of which are currently working in local and state immigrant communities in Mississippi.

Applicants should have a minimum of five years of legal experience, which should include litigating within the areas of law referenced above. The Director should also possess staff management experience, junior attorney mentorship experience, or their equivalents. The Director must hold a J.D. degree from an American Bar Association-accredited law school or international equivalent. The Director must be admitted to the Mississippi Bar, obtain admission through reciprocity with his or her current state of licensure, or obtain admission through examination at the earliest practicable administration of the Mississippi Bar Examination. The successful candidate will demonstrate promise as a teacher, a commitment to clinical teaching and public interest law practice, and service. Any candidate pursuing a tenure-track appointment should have a record of scholarship or evidence of promise to produce scholarship that is consistent with the demands of clinical teaching and litigation.
