Job Description
The Assistant Controller reports to the Controller and is responsible for supporting accounting management, formulating, and maintaining internal controls, and lead the preparation of financial statements. The Assistant Controller will also manage journal entries, assist with budgets and forecasts, and ensure compliance. This role will be given the opportunity to design key accounting processes and will be a key player in the implementation of automation and other exciting changes in a collaborative and team-oriented environment.
Schedule: This is a hybrid position based at our office in Chico, CA, with in-office days Tuesday- Thursday.
What You'll Do
Lead a team of 3-5 to manage day-to-day accounting operations including billing, A/R, A/P, GL duties, and oversee state tax compliance.
Lead monthly close process - prepare/review account reconciliations and journal entries, roll forward and analyze inventory activity, update expense accruals and reserves for returns, self-insured medical liability and other key areas as needed, and ensure capital expenditures and lease activity are properly captured
Lead the preparation and publishing of monthly, quarterly, and yearly financial statements/reports and supporting analysis
Ensure internal controls are maintained for financial transactions and financial reporting, including documentation of business processes and updating accounting policies.
Lead preparation of audit schedules
Collaborate with other key departments (Marketing, Inventory, Planning and Allocation, Data and Analytics, Operations, and Legal) to provide financial data and analysis for decision support, contracts and insurance renewals. Ensure accuracy of inventory in partnership with Operations and reconciling activity between WMS, sales order system, and cycle counts
Support FP&A during annual budgeting and quarterly forecasting processes
Prepare analysis for key month-over-month and year-over-year fluctuations Provide financial information as needed, for capital investments, pricing decisions, and contract negotiations
Assist with monitoring daily treasury operations, including monitoring cash flow activity versus the weekly forecasts
Mentor and develop accounting team members
Additional duties and ad hoc projects as necessary
Travel as needed (10%)
What You'll Need
Bachelor's Degree Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or related field
8+ years of previous experience or a combination of training and experience
3+ years of experience in a leadership role including all aspects of coaching, mentoring, and providing verbal and written feedback
Exceptional communication, organizational and analytical skills
Advanced MS Excel skills and ability to work with large data sets
Highly detail oriented and organized with ability to meet assigned deadlines
Ability to work collaboratively with all levels of employees, management, and external parties to maximize performance, creativity, problem solving and results
Proficiency in ERP systems
Ability to adapt to a fast-paced high-energy, deadline-oriented environment
Improve/implement processes to evolve with the needs of being publicly traded
Strong time management skills
Previous experience working for a publicly traded company
Self-motivated and effective problem solver
Strong understanding of GAAP, financial reporting, and internal controls

Retail industry experience
