Job Description

The Assistant DIO supports the Designated Institutional Official in the oversight and administration of the institution's ACGME-accredited graduate medical education programs. Working under the DIO's authority and delegation, this role helps ensure programs operate in compliance with ACGME standards, supports the work of the Graduate Medical Education Committee (GMEC), and serves as a key point of contact for program directors and coordinators. The Assistant DIO may act on the DIO's behalf when delegated and helps carry the day-to-day operational load of GME oversight.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support the DIO in the oversight and administration of all ACGME-accredited programs sponsored by the institution.
  • Assist in leading and staffing the GMEC, including preparing materials and helping carry out its required functions — program oversight, the Annual Institutional Review (AIR), and special reviews.
  • Help monitor institutional and program compliance with the ACGME Institutional Requirements, Common Program Requirements, and specialty-specific requirements.
  • Assist in reviewing program information forms and ACGME submissions before they go to the DIO for final review and approval.
  • Support oversight of the learning and working environment — resident well-being, supervision, clinical experience and education (duty-hour) limits, and a safe environment to report concerns.
  • Work closely with program directors and coordinators on accreditation tasks, citations, and corrective action plans.
  • Help maintain relationships and documentation with participating sites (affiliation agreements and program letters of agreement).
  • Act on behalf of the DIO on delegated matters and serve as backup when the DIO is unavailable.
  • Help prepare reports to the DIO and governing body on the status of GME programs and trainees.

Requirements

  • MD, DO, or equivalent (PhD or senior academic/administrative leadership considered for the right candidate).
  • Experience in graduate medical education — as a program director, associate program director, GME administrator, or in a similar role.
  • Working knowledge of ACGME accreditation: the Institutional Requirements, Common Program Requirements, the GMEC, and the AIR.
  • Strong administrative, organizational, and interpersonal skills; able to work effectively with faculty, trainees, and leadership.

Preferred

  • Prior experience as an Assistant/Associate DIO or in senior GME administration.
  • Experience supporting new program applications or guiding programs through initial or continued accreditation.
  • Board certification in a recognized specialty.
