Job Description
The Assistant Director of Engineering is responsible for supporting the Director of Engineering in the overall leadership and operations of the maintenance department. This position combines both hands-on technical responsibilities as well as leadership oversight of maintenance employees. Utilizes leadership skills to ensure high quality of work, guest satisfaction, positive employee relations, and achievement of financial results. Helps lead key initiatives including preventive maintenance programs, asset preservation, energy management, safety compliance, and emergency preparedness.
Engineering Operations & Facility Maintenance
- Supports the Director of Engineering in leading the daily operations of the maintenance department.
- Performs building maintenance tasks and repairs, including advanced troubleshooting, repair, and maintenance of HVAC, electrical, plumbing, mechanical, and building systems.
- Oversees and participates in preventive and predictive maintenance programs to ensure reliability and longevity of hotel assets.
- Conducts routine inspections of guest rooms, public areas, back-of-house spaces, exterior grounds, and equipment to ensure compliance with brand standards and regulatory requirements.
- Coordinates maintenance projects, capital improvements, and vendor activities.
- Ensures proper documentation and use of the work order management system to track maintenance activities and asset performance.
- Maintains operational readiness of pool, hot water boilers, air handlers, generators, kitchen equipment, and other critical infrastructure as applicable.
- In conjunction with the Director of Engineering, serves as an Energy Champion by promoting initiatives and implementing policies, procedures, and projects that improve efficiency and reduce overall energy consumption.
Leadership & Team Management
- Provides direct supervision, guidance, and support to maintenance employees.
- Assists with scheduling, task prioritization, delegation of responsibilities, and workflow coordination.
- Participates in hiring, onboarding, training, coaching, and performance management of maintenance employees.
- Develops staff technical competencies through mentoring, cross-training, and hands-on instruction.
- Promotes accountability, professionalism, teamwork, and a culture of continuous improvement.
- Reinforces service standards and ensures timely completion of maintenance requests and guest needs.
Financial
- Drives hotel profitability through effective control of maintenance expenses and safeguarding of equipment and supplies.
- Ensures proper maintenance of company assets and exhibits understanding of how this impacts the overall financial success of the hotel property.
- Assists Director of Engineering in preparation of and adherence to department budget.
Guest Service
- Drives guest satisfaction by setting a strong example for others through exceptional guest service and by holding other maintenance employees accountable for high guest service standards.
- Utilizes in-depth knowledge of hotel property, guest room repairs, and common area maintenance to drive guest satisfaction. Proactively shares knowledge and develops and trains other employees.
- Performs service recovery efforts and partners with other hotel leaders to resolve guest concerns.
- Leads other maintenance employees to ensure successful service recovery outcomes.
Collaboration and Teamwork
- Drives collaboration with team members, vendors, and contractors to ensure timely completion of work orders, projects, and improvements.
- Promotes strong cross-departmental communication and collaboration to ensure maintenance needs are addressed efficiently, priorities are aligned, and service solutions are delivered in a timely and effective manner.
- Takes ownership of maintenance issues and ensures proper follow-up with stakeholders.
- Fosters collaboration and a positive, respectful, and professional work environment.
- Fosters teamwork and collaboration in meeting guests' needs, including proactively partnering with other leaders/departments.
Works Safely
- Sets an example for others by working safely at all times and maintaining a clean and safe work environment in compliance with CSM, brand, local, state and federal regulations.
- Ensures all maintenance employees follow proper safety procedures and protocols at all times.
- Proactively identifies potential safety concerns/hazards and works with appropriate stakeholders to implement resolutions.
- Assists Director of Engineering in developing, maintaining, and executing emergency response procedures for the property.
- Responsible for ensuring proper use and safeguarding of all maintenance equipment and supplies.
- Operates all equipment and machinery following safe and proper procedures.
- Follows all CSM procedures for guest/employee incidents.
- Ensures proper use of personal protective equipment at all times when necessary.
Self-Management
- Sets an example for others by being self-motivated and demonstrating the ability to multitask and prioritize work.
- Demonstrates effective self/workload management and the ability to work with minimal supervision.
- Behaves in a manner that aligns with CSM's core values and upholds values standards with others.
- Ensures adherence to CSM attendance policy, general work rules, and department procedures.
- Attends and helps lead department and hotel meetings and ensures important information is communicated to others.
- Maintains in-depth knowledge of CSM and maintenance specific standard operating procedures (SOPs) and trains other maintenance employees to ensure SOP compliance.
- Completes all assigned duties inside or outside the normal scope of responsibilities within the maintenance department.
Education: High School diploma or GED required. Certified Pool Operator (CPO) and appliance repair certification is desired, or the ability to obtain certification based on property needs.
Experience/Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
A minimum of five (5) years of building maintenance or engineering experience is required, along with three (3) to five (5) years of supervisory or leadership experience, ideally in a hotel or hospitality environment. Candidates should possess strong experience with commercial building systems, preventive maintenance programs, and overall hotel/hospitality operations.
Physical Requirements:
The position requires the ability to lift, push, and pull up to 100 pounds on a regular basis, as well as the ability to stand, walk, climb ladders, bend, kneel, reach, and perform physical labor for extended periods of time. The individual must be capable of working both indoors and outdoors in varying temperatures and environmental conditions and must be able to safely operate tools, machinery, lifts, and other maintenance equipment.
