A little about this position:

  • Collect and analyze weather and snowpack data to support avalanche forecast products at Mammoth Resorts. Collaborate with Ski Patrol Leadership and Mountain Operations to make avalanche risk management decisions for avalanche workers and ski area operations at Mammoth Mountain. Provide guidance, policy, oversight and training for the avalanche forecasting team at June Mountain. Provide avalanche safety training to Mammoth Resorts. Mentor and assist front line Patrol staff with daily duties when appropriate.
  • This role combines field leadership with administrative oversight and requires strong interpersonal skills, sound judgment, expert skiing ability, strong downhill mountain biking ability, and the ability to lead effectively. The Assistant Director, Snow Safety works closely with the Director, Ski Patrol and other Patrol management to coordinate staffing, training, avalanche mitigation support, operational priorities, and emergency response readiness across the mountain.

Requirements:

  • Minimum 10 years of experience as a Professional Ski Patroller in a Class A Avalanche rated ski resort and meet the requirements of a TT-C or TT-D Mammoth Patroller.
  • Experience managing people and risks in high consequence environments. More detail requested- years of experience or detail on risks
  • Current EMR, EMT, or Paramedic with BLS CPR first aid certification.
  • Current California Avalanche Blaster license.
  • Expert knowledge in Snow, Weather and Avalanche phenomena
  • Experience managing a team tasked with complex avalanche mitigation and complex ski area operations or comparable operation during all conditions
  • Experience organizing and managing a team of skilled professionals in the daily duties of the Snow Safety Team.
  • Education of a Pro 2 or equivalent certification with the ability to demonstrate experience in Snow Pit Profiles, stability tests and recognizing layers of concern
  • Terrain analysis for avalanche mitigation and worker safety
  • Training, communicating and mentoring both a small and large staff
  • Continued education of industry avalanche mitigation standards
  • Maintenance and development of Snow/Weather sites 
  • Continued Professional Development through recognized authorities
  • Experience working in high stress environments with ability to make critical decisions
  • Ability to manage the Ski Patrol Snow Safety team and provide guidance to the Director and Mountain Operations.
  • Able to make major operational decisions as needed in the absence of the Ski Patrol Director and Assistant Director of Operations.
  • Must be able to work as a team with both Lead Forecasters and Ski Patrol Leadership.
  • Ability to present forecasting and operational decisions to Senior Leadership.
  • Ability to manage patrollers in daily operations in the absence of Patrol Leadership.
  • Ability to mentor and lead Ski Patrollers on any avalanche control route in all conditions.
  • Ability to provide training in the job responsibilities and skill sets of the Snow Safety Team.
  • Demonstrated ability to make rational decisions in a high stress environment or situations.
  • Must be able to safely ski expert terrain in all conditions.
  • Must be proficient in all necessary computer skills.

Pay: $95,649.29 - $102,186.97 per year
