About the Position

The Assistant Director of Accounting is part of the Accounting Department, reporting directly to the Director of Accounting, who in return reports to the Chief Financial Officer. The primary purpose of this position is to perform clerical and financial tasks as designated by the Director of Accounting. This position is located in Johnson City, TN. The job requires 40 hours per week and receives full benefits. Irregular hours may be required; and, if so, will be scheduled in advance.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

General Responsibilities
  • Process grant preapproval and disbursement requests
  • Process grant preapproval and disbursement requests
  • Track grants for compliance
  • Process Positive Pay transactions and ACH payments
  • Reconcile bank statements with accounting system
  • Set-up and close projects in accounting system for new build departments
  • Track and integrate non-home related expenses into the accounting system for all new build departments
  • Process payments from statements
  • Assist with payroll
  • Complete monthly and year end closing procedures and financial statements 
  • Provide financial reports for multiple departments using various software systems
  • Make general ledger transactions
  • Create and maintain complex excel spreadsheets
  • Other duties as assigned

Candidate Description 

  • Desire to serve others by working with a Christian organization and ability to interact cooperatively and in a spirit of teamwork with all employees of the Appalachia Service Project.
  • Non-profit accounting experience.
  • Bachelor’s Degree or higher in Accounting.
  • 5+ years of accounting, program management or comparative experience.
  • QuickBooks contactor experience 
  • Microsoft Great Plains experience
  • Microsoft Business Central Experience
  • Bank reconciliation, month and year end closing experiences
  • Construction accounting experience
  • Experience in filing grant pre-approval and disbursement requests
  • Thorough computer literacy and understanding of an integrated general ledger accounting program
  • Exceptional knowledge of Microsoft Excel
  • Good reading, writing and interpersonal communication skills
  • Detail oriented
