Job Description

As the Assistant Director of Nursing, you will supervise all nursing services and total care delivery across the facility. You’ll ensure residents receive care aligned with state and federal regulatory codes, and with our facility’s policies, procedures and culture of dignity and value. You will also serve as a mandated reporter for vulnerable adults — required to report any alleged maltreatment, neglect, or abuse of vulnerable residents/tenants to your supervisor and appropriate state agencies.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develop and maintain nursing services objectives, nursing practice standards, nursing procedure manual, written job descriptions for each nursing level, and a written organization plan of the nursing service delineating functional structure and lines of communication.
  • Participate in planning, developing and implementing written resident-care policies; identify resident-care issues requiring changes and bring them to the Quality Assurance committee.
  • Maintain effective working relationships with facility administration and coordinate nursing services with other care services (physician, physical therapy, occupational therapy, dietary).
  • Participate in the selection of prospective residents in relation to their nursing needs and the nursing competencies available.
  • Ensure that each resident has a care plan, reviewed quarterly and modified as necessary.
  • Be accountable to the Director of Nursing with written delegation of responsibility and requisite authority for provision, direction and supervision of nursing care.
  • Review each admission to the facility and assist the attending physician with planning the resident’s continuing care.
  • Report all accidents and/or dereliction of duties.
  • Oversee the recording, handling, and security of narcotics and barbiturates.
  • Ensure nursing documentation is informative and descriptive of the nursing care rendered.
  • Ensure nursing personnel duties are clearly defined and assigned consistent with staff education, preparation and licensing.
  • Coordinate the Quality Assurance program.
  • In the absence of the DON, make decisions pertinent to facility operation in accordance with the organizational chart.
  • Ensure compliance with federal and state regulation including required in-services; enhance residents’ quality of life through ongoing staff education.
  • Teach long-term care skills and concepts in line with facility needs.
  • Prepare orientation materials for pool staff, ensure pool staff are oriented prior to working.
  • Develop annual in-service (education) calendar; post scheduled in-services in a timely manner; maintain records.
  • Coordinate state/federal mandated in-services; develop in-services in conjunction with QA committee; participate in QA as directed by Administrator/QI.
  • Report to the DON any staff who did not attend required in-services.
  • Maintain employee hepatitis vaccination records.
  • Chair the Infection Control Committee: set meeting times, establish policies/procedures.
  • Coordinate Medicare certifications; assist with pre-admission screening; coordinate Medicare “denial” letters; coordinate MDS schedule with other disciplines; coordinate Medicare charting schedule; assist with policy/procedure implementation impacting Medicare coverage.
  • Monitor overall nursing department operations with enthusiasm. Ensure residents’ environment is safe, secure and dignified.
  • Demonstrate leadership ability, integrity, creativity and strong communication skills. Exhibit tact and good judgment interacting with physicians, residents, families, visitors, management and staff.
  • Possess or be willing to acquire basic computer skills. Be familiar with all departments’ policies/regulations/procedures.
  • Work collaboratively with others; maintain harmonious relationships with the health care team. Be knowledgeable of standards of care including restorative care, comprehensive assessments and care plan development.
  • Be available (or as a designated designee) at all times for emergencies. Foster organizational loyalty, punctuality, dependability; follow instructions, meet deadlines. Abide by and ensure compliance with facility policies and procedures.
  • Perform other duties as directed by the DON.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Manage Registered Nurses (RNs), Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) and Nursing Assistants (NARs).
  • Carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with facility policies and applicable laws: interviewing, hiring, training employees; planning, assigning and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
  • Organize and prioritize projects; communicate clearly and process data and information accurately.
  • Adhere to federal/state regulations including resident rights; maintain a pleasant manner, proper grooming and hygiene; maintain respectful working relationships with co-workers.
  • Be able to safely perform essential job functions, with or without reasonable accommodations, without creating a threat to others or self.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Thorough knowledge of professional nursing theory and practice.
  • Thorough knowledge of nursing service administration.
  • Considerable knowledge of restorative nursing and geriatric/psychiatric nursing.
  • Must have thorough knowledge of Medicare A requirements.
  • Ability to plan, assign, supervise the work of others.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective professional and public relationships.
  • Ability to maintain accurate and complete records and make clear detailed reports.

EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE

  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
  • Current registration as a Registered Nurse (RN) in Minnesota.
  • Training or experience in nursing service administration.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

  • Ability to read, analyze and interpret complex documents.
  • Ability to respond effectively to sensitive inquiries or complaints.
  • Ability to write original or innovative speeches/articles and present on complex topics to top‐management or external groups.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

  • Ability to work with mathematical concepts (probability, statistical inference).
  • Ability to apply fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions to practical situations.

REASONING ABILITY

  • Ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to a wide range of intellectual and practical problems.
  • Ability to deal with abstract and concrete variables.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks, interruptions, noise and work cooperatively while maintaining a pleasant demeanor.

CERTIFICATES / LICENSES

  • Graduate of an accredited nursing school.
  • Current RN licensure in Minnesota.

PHYSICAL DEMANDSWhile performing duties, employee is expected to:

  • Stand, walk, sit; use hands to finger/handle/feel; reach with hands and arms; crouch; talk or hear; taste or smell.
  • Hear and distinguish normal sounds with background noise, including stethoscope use, respiratory status, low-voice levels.
  • Control equipment, palpation, wound care, medication administration.
  • Detect smells (smoke, spoiled food, soiled linen).
  • Lift and/or move up to 25 lbs.
  • Vision: close vision, color vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
