Job Description

Job Summary:

The Assistant Engineering Manager is responsible for supporting the Engineering Manager in overseeing the daily operations, mechanical maintenance, and repair of facility systems at Comerica Park. This includes HVAC, plumbing, boilers, chillers, air handlers, and other mechanical infrastructure. The role provides leadership to the maintenance team, ensures efficient and safe facility operations, coordinates preventative and corrective maintenance, manages contractors, and drives continuous improvement while complying with all applicable codes, standards, and safety regulations

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Assist the Engineering Manager in planning, organizing, and directing the mechanical maintenance program, including preventative maintenance, troubleshooting, and repairs on HVAC units, plumbing systems, pumps, motors, boilers, chillers, air handlers, and other facility equipment.

  2. Supervise, train, mentor, and evaluate HVAC Technicians and other maintenance staff; assign work orders, monitor progress, and ensure timely completion of tasks.

  3. Read and interpret blueprints, technical manuals, schematics, and building drawings to determine maintenance requirements and scope of work.

  4. Oversee the completion of mechanical service requests and emergency repairs, ensuring compliance with OSHA, local building codes, and safety standards.

  5. Participate in and help coordinate the on-call emergency rotation; respond to urgent mechanical issues as needed and lead response efforts.

  6. Monitor and optimize the performance of mechanical systems; implement operational techniques and efficiency improvements to reduce downtime and energy consumption.

  7. Manage the safekeeping, inventory, and proper stocking of mechanical tools, equipment, supplies, and spare parts; conduct regular audits of mechanical rooms, workshops, and storage areas.

  8. Document all maintenance activities, repairs, and inspections using the Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS); generate reports for management review.

  9. Collaborate with external contractors and vendors; provide technical input, oversee work quality, and ensure seamless integration with facility operations.

  10. Conduct full-building quality assurance checks, lead or participate in inspections with third-party supervisors, prioritize tasks, and communicate findings and recommendations to the Engineering Manager.

  11. Report irregularities, equipment damage, safety concerns, or discrepancies promptly; assist in developing corrective action plans.

  12. Support budget management by tracking maintenance expenses, recommending purchases, and identifying cost-saving opportunities.

  13. Ensure adherence to all safety protocols and promote a culture of safety within the team.

  14. Perform hands-on maintenance and repairs as needed to support the team during peak periods or emergencies.

Supplemental Job Functions:

  1. Perform additional duties as assigned.

  2. Participate in facility planning, capital improvement projects, and event-related mechanical preparations.

  3. While performing the duties of this job, the colleague is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to handle tools and equipment; reach with hands and arms; and communicate effectively. The colleague frequently climbs ladders or balances on elevated platforms. The colleague occasionally stoops, kneels, crouches, or crawls. The colleague must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move more than 100 pounds with assistance. Specific vision abilities include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. The colleague must work in both indoor and outdoor environments, including mechanical rooms with exposure to varying temperatures.

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  1. High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED) required, associate or bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, Facilities Management, or a related field preferred.

  2. Minimum seven (7) years of progressive experience in mechanical maintenance (HVAC, plumbing, and related systems), with at least two (2) years in a supervisory or lead role.

  3. Strong working knowledge of HVAC, plumbing, boilers, chillers, and other building mechanical systems.

  4. Working knowledge and operation of hand tools, power tools, and mechanical equipment (e.g., forklifts, scissor lifts, or skid loaders).

  1. Customer service-oriented with a professional and neat appearance at all times.

  2. Proactive awareness of the work environment, addressing cleanliness by picking up trash, wrappers, or debris to maintain a tidy facility.

  3. Full-time position requires flexible scheduling, including possible first, second, and third shift rotations.

  4. Enjoy helping others and thrive in a collaborative team environment.

  5. Ability to multitask, meet tight deadlines, and perform effectively under stress.

  6. Proactive in fostering positive interactions with guests and coworkers, maintaining respectful and friendly communication.

  7. Available to attend all required training courses as a prerequisite for employment.

  8. Ability to stand, walk, or navigate stairs throughout an event.

  9. Proficient in operating software on mobile platforms for maintenance tracking.

Working Conditions:

  1. Requires frequent visual and auditory attention to monitor equipment performance.

  2. Exposure to moderate to high noise levels in mechanical rooms and event spaces.

  3. Work environment includes indoor and outdoor settings, with potential exposure to extreme temperatures, chemicals, and mechanical hazards.
