Position Description
The Assistant Field Operations Manager - Water/Sewer supports the planning, coordination, and execution of municipal water and sewer field operations. This role assists with regulatory compliance, field inspections, construction oversight, staff coordination, and day-to-day operational support to ensure projects are completed safely, efficiently, and in compliance with applicable standards and regulations.
Project/Technical Duties & Responsibilities
- Assist with oversight of water and sewer system field activities, including inspections, testing, sampling, and emergency repairs.
- Support compliance with EGLE requirements and applicable municipal, state, and industry standards.
- Assist in identifying leaks, service issues, and construction deficiencies; support corrective actions.
- Help coordinate traffic control, safety measures, and emergency response activities as needed.
- Maintain accurate field logs, reports, and documentation.
- Support daily field scheduling, route assignments, and work prioritization.
- Assist with contractor coordination, material verification, and change request reviews.
Financial Duties & Responsibilities
- Assist with cost tracking, progress reporting, and schedule updates.
- Support proposal development, cost estimates, and documentation.
- Assist with invoicing support and coordination with finance as needed.
Employee Management Duties & Responsibilities
- Provide leadership and direction to the team, including accountability for the growth and development of talent in the organization.
- Allocate workload within the project team, ensuring all team members are fully utilized.
- Act as a mentor to team members within the department and throughout the organization.
- All other duties as assigned.
Requirements
Qualifications
- Active Michigan S1 or S2 Water Operator License (or ability to obtain).
- Minimum ten (10) years' experience as an Operator in Charge or equivalent experience with water works systems.
- Working knowledge of water distribution systems, sanitary sewers, construction practices, and safety standards.
- Ability to read and interpret plans, specifications, and technical documents.
- Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.
- Valid driver's license and ability to respond to after-hours emergencies as needed.
Work Environment and Physical Demands
- Assist with enforcing safety policies and maintaining a safe work environment.
- Provide guidance and on-the-job support to field staff and inspectors.
- Coordinate with internal departments, contractors, and municipal representatives.
- Combination of office and field work; frequent exposure to outdoor conditions and construction environments.
- ·May require after-hours and emergency response support.
- Ability to perform physical tasks associated with field inspections and site work.
