POSITION: Assistant Professor of Biology

DIVISION|DEPARTMENT: Health and Natural Sciences | School of Arts & Sciences

FLSA STATUS: Full-Time | Exempt

REPORTS TO: Chair, Health & Natural Sciences Division

The Assistant Professor of Biology is a full-time non-tenured faculty position requiring a strong educational background specifically in more than one area of Biology. The Assistant Professor of Biology shall primarily be responsible for supporting the Health and Natural Sciences Division in maximizing the University's operating performance while achieving institutional goals and objectives. The Assistant Professor of Biology shall implement strategies to train biological/ radiobiological professionals offering a myriad of undergraduate biological/ radiobiological programs for our students. This key position shall report to the Chair of the Health and Natural Sciences Division.

Essential Functions

  • Perform teaching, scholarship, service, professional development, and program assessment for accreditation.
  • Seek and obtain external funding.
  • Publish in referred journals, book chapters, and books.
  • Collaborate with other faculty on trans-disciplinary research.
  • Represent the Division, Department, and University at professional meetings locally, nationally, and internationally.
  • Advise students for both academic and career fields.
  • Assist in the development of additional biological/ radiobiological curricula/courses/programs.
  • Assist in the development of partnerships with external organizations and entities in order to strengthen the Department's objectives and goals.
  • Support in serving as a mentor for undergraduate research projects in Biology.
  • Physical ability to perform the essential functions of the position, with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Work collaboratively with the other faculty to advance the programs within the Division of Health and Natural Sciences.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as required or deemed appropriate to the accomplishments of the responsibilities and functions of the Division of Health and Natural Sciences.
  • The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that logically relate to the position.

  • Ability to handle information of a sensitive and confidential nature in the utmost professional manner.
  • Demonstrate a high level of professionalism, initiative, resourcefulness, and personal accountability.
  • Effective analytical, interpersonal and decision-making skills and ability to work with diverse constituents.
  • Excellent communication (oral and written), organizational, and time management skills.
  • Attention to detail and adaptability to a changing environment is extremely important as well as dependability.
  • Manage, prioritize, and accomplish multiple tasks/projects simultaneously in a deadline-driven environment.
  • Sound knowledge of health and safety regulations.
  • Possess excellent research skills to train students and colleagues to broaden participation in research and mentorship.
  • A thorough understanding of technology, learning management systems, and computer applications is essential (i.e. Blackboard, Canvas, Jenzabar).
  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite, and LinkedIn Learning, as well as knowledge and understanding of the organizational structure, workflow, and operating procedures.
  • Moderate physical activity. Requires handling objects of average weight up to fifty (50) pounds or standing and/or walking for more than four (4) hours per day.

Minimum Requirements

  • An earned doctoral/terminal degree in Biology or related field and successful completion of a minimum of 18 hours of directly related graduate coursework.
  • The ability to provide quality instruction in the academic disciplines, namely Anatomy and Physiology, Botany, Radiology and Human Physiology.
  • The potential for peer-reviewed research, scholarly and/or creative accomplishment by representing the University in the academic discipline.
  • The potential to have a positive impact through service that represents the University on campus and within the greater community.
  • A minimum of two years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified are required. Higher education experience is preferred.
  • Ability to maintain a flexible work schedule that may include working nights and weekends (if applicable).
