General Description (Purpose and Function):

The Division of Surgical Oncology at the University of Miami, Leonard Miller School of Medicine is seeking a fellowship-trained surgeon to join our surgical team. We have a strong multidisciplinary group that works to provide high quality clinical care and access to cutting edge clinical trials. The Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center is the only NCI-designated cancer center in South Florida and is focused on innovation in cancer care. The candidate will work closely with the Chief of Surgical Oncology to continue to support the gastrointestinal cancer service line.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities (For-exempt Employees Include Percent of Effort):

Job responsibilities include participation in clinical and educational activities as they relate to the Division of Surgical Oncology and the Department of Surgery with a special emphasis on gastrointestinal cancer as following:

  • Oversees outcomes, quality, and patient experience for the program

  • Works closely and collaborates with the Chief and all members of the team including medical oncologists.

  • Coordinates and provide scheduling services for physicians to ensure coverage to perform services when scheduled

  • Maintain administrative records pertaining to the scheduling of all physicians and ensure the hospital (s) has/have reasonable access to such records

  • Perform daily unit rounds on all assigned inpatients and perform all inpatient follow up during the inpatient stay

  • Provide outpatient professional medical services performed in all scheduled clinics related to the Program.

  • Participate in regular outpatient clinics for the Program

  • Coordinate inpatient care and clinic care under the Program with the patient's primary physician

  • Collaborate with other physicians and hospital personnel (including case managers) to reduce medically unnecessary use of resources and length of stay and coordinate interdepartmental patient care.

  • Provide assistance as needed to bed control and other hospital personnel to facilitate patient throughput

  • Respond in a timely fashion to patients, other physicians or hospital personnel making patient care-related inquiries

  • Work collaboratively to implement clinical effectiveness programs, including clinical pathways and other similar guidelines and protocols as needed

  • Participate in all root cause analysis and related activities conducted for the Program at all sites of service

  • Work collaboratively with hospital personnel to implement the quality goals of the Program and implement quality initiatives to address any identified deficiencies

  • Participate in periodic meetings with unit personnel at the hospital related to core measures and patient and physician satisfaction

  • Implement teaching activities related to residents and fellows rotating through the Program

  • Work with hospital personnel to obtain all mutually agreed upon program designations of distinction

  • Provides professional medical services twenty four hours a day and seven days a week for 365 days (or 366 as the case may be) a year to all inpatients/outpatients in the Program in collaboration with other Faculty in the section and the division.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Along with proper training and certification, the incumbent must have a keen interest in and concern for the needs of cancer patients, and other related surgical oncology anamolies.

  • Knowledge of and ability to apply professional medical principles, procedures, and techniques

  • Thorough knowledge of pharmacological agents used in patient treatments

  • Effective verbal and written communication skills along with proper telephone etiquette

  • Performs duties in tactful and professional manner

  • Fluency in Spanish is greatly valued because our local and regional demographics.

Education Requirements (Essential Requirements):

Applicants should have a strong commitment to patient care and education and an interest in clinical research. Bachelor's degree in pre-medicine or related field, followed by 4 years in medical school and additional residency and fellowship specialty training.

  • Eligible candidates must be board certified in surgery, be able to obtain and maintain a valid DEA Registration and Florida Medical License, and an ACGME approved surgical oncology fellowship.

Work Experience Requirements (Essential Requirements):

  • 3 - 5 years post fellowship clinical experience in the field of gastrointestinal surgical oncology preferred

Responsibilities/Qualifications

The Division of Surgical Oncology at the University of Miami, Leonard Miller School of Medicine is seeking a fellowship-trained surgeon to join our surgical team. We have a strong multidisciplinary group that works to provide high quality clinical care and access to cutting edge clinical trials. The Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center is the only NCI-designated cancer center in South Florida and is focused on innovation in cancer care. The candidate will work closely with the Chief of Surgical Oncology to continue to support the oncology service line.

The position is for an Assistant/Associate Professor of Surgery. Job responsibilities include participation in clinical, research and educational activities as they relate to the Division of Surgical Oncology and the Department of Surgery with a special emphasis on leading and growing our nationally recognized HIPEC program. The candidate will be responsible for delivering care of Surgical Oncology patients at the University of Miami Hospital, Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center and Jackson Memorial Hospital. In collaboration with the Division Chief, the applicant will be part of implementing the Division's strategic plan which sets forth clinical, financial, educational and research divisional objectives to support and complement the mission statement of the Department, the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine and the affiliated Hospitals. He/she will be expected to participate in all divisional activities, perform patient care activities for surgical oncology patients, develop an independent practice and become involved in teaching medical students, residents and fellows.

Additionally, the candidate will also be responsible for pursuing research protocols and/or grants, secure independent funding and be an integral part of the academic enterprise in the Division of Surgical Oncology and at the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center. The applicant will be expected to work collaboratively with other departments to help to grow the surgical oncology research program.

He/She will demonstrate a caring attitude and be able to fulfill service responsibilities in the most cost effective, customer friendly manner. This individual must possess personal and professional integrity and the highest ethical standards that can be a model for faculty, staff, students and residents.
