Job Description

Subject to Collective Bargaining Agreement Requirements

The Department of English at The University of Akron (https://www.uakron.edu/english/) invites applications for a non-tenure-track Assistant Professor of Instruction position for the general education, English BA, and English graduate programs starting in January 2027. The teaching load is twelve credit hours per semester or equivalent. Standard service is expected.

The University of Akron seeks scholars who will lead collaborations among faculty, students, and community partners that address questions of well-being, public safety, and civic engagement.

Required Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in English, or equivalent terminal degree.
  • Three years' experience and demonstrated excellence teaching university-level English courses.
  • Ability to teach online courses in support of the Graduate Certificate in English Dual Credit Preparation.
  • Continued professional engagement with the fields of Composition and/or Rhetoric.
  • Ability to adapt to emerging technologies and integrate evolving tools and practices into teaching.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Teaching experience in any or all of the following: Composition studies, literary theory and criticism, professional writing, undergraduate and graduate literature courses.
  • Experience working with high school educators.
  • Experience developing undergraduate and graduate curriculum.
  • Ability to take part in ongoing program assessment.
  • Record of supporting student success through mentorship and engagement.

The mission of the English department is:

  • To help students improve the ability to read intelligently and to write with precision, fluency, and grace.
  • To enable students to evaluate literature of the United States and beyond, with an appreciation for the multiple perspectives making up the world of letters.
  • To provide students with a broad historical view of literature, as well as an intensive knowledge of selected periods, genres, and writers.
  • To assist students in furthering the knowledge of the structure and history of language, and to acquaint them with the theories of language held by major schools of linguistic thought.
  • To enable students to evaluate texts not only as readers, but also as writers, and to seek innovative methods for expressing their own observations.
