Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College employs faculty who are student-centered individuals with a passion for teaching and student development. Previous teaching experience, with online teaching and/or hyflex experience, strongly preferred. Responsibilities include a 24-credit hour annual load. Other responsibilities may include advising, recruiting, and mentoring students; keeping courses updated in Canvas; participating in course and program assessment; and general service to the Program, Department, Division and the College. The faculty is expected to demonstrate current content knowledge, methodologies, and skills. Regular and substantive interactions with students, as well as timely feedback, is expected. A strong commitment to the mission of the college is expected.

Essential Job Responsibilities:

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills; professional and engaging demeanor with students, colleagues, staff, and administration
  • Instruct students in appropriate course content, provide experiential learning (if appropriate to the course), and guide students' work on assignments throughout the term.
  • Clearly explain assignments, expectations, grading system, and method of preferred contact to students
  • Post and hold office hours (at least one hour per week per course), in-person and/or online
  • Teach on campus during the scheduled class times. Maintain weekly contact (at minimum) with students through such methods as discussion boards, synchronous instruction, posted office hours, and the ongoing use of the Learning Management System (LMS) Canvas, and other technology such as Teams, and SMWC email
  • Develop and revise course curriculum according to program guidelines. Utilize the text and approved syllabi which includes student learning outcomes. Ensure all courses have a presence in the LMS; notify the Office of Student Success when a course is ready for review and corrections are completed in the College's LMS or Canvas
  • Provide a list of required texts at least 10 weeks prior to course delivery. Ensure that all texts are approved by program Chair/Director prior to adoption
  • Monitors that courses are in adherence with the College Standards for ADA requirements, and that corrections have been made
  • Notify the Program Director/Chair and submit an Early Alert if a student is not maintaining contact or sufficient progress
  • Provide feedback on students' work in the form of graded assignments within 5 days of assignment submission
  • Submit reports or evaluations of students' progress when requested to do so by the Director/Chair
  • Enter grades in Canvas grade book for all students by the appropriate departmental or institutional date (if uncertain, discuss with the chair/director)
  • Submit any requested aggregated student data for Key Assessments/Signature Assignments as indicated for Program Assessment
  • Encourage students to complete the Course Evaluation at the end of the term
  • Adhere to the policies and procedures outlined in the SMWC Faculty Handbook and the College and/or Department Academic Integrity Policy.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to university and community service and scholarship
  • Attend Faculty Assembly as scheduled. Serve on university, department, and program committees as assigned or elected
  • Maintain a full-time faculty teaching load
  • Provide faculty supervision for practicum and internship students (if applicable)
  • Adhere to program standards/guidelines for online instruction

Other Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Keep up-to-date on policies and procedures within the Program, Department, and College by reading the posted Minutes
  • Each academic program may have additional specific responsibilities listed for this position

Supervision Exercised:

  • Graduate student(s) if assigned to the course
  • Clinical supervisors if assigned to the course
  • Preceptors if assigned to the course

Working Conditions:

  • Office space is provided on campus for full-time campus-based faculty
  • A computer that is compatible with the College operating system and software application will be provided

Requirements

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master's degree or higher in a related field according to program requirements
  • Current credentials, such as licensure, if applicable
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Professional and engaging demeanor with students and colleagues
  • Demonstrated experience incorporating technology in instructional practices. Experience using a learning management system such as Canvas

Expected Competencies by end of first year of employment

  • Evidence of successful college teaching and organizational skills. Distance and Hyflex faculty (teaches all or a majority of contract via distance education delivery) must demonstrate strong online teaching skills.
  • Ease with using online learning platforms
  • Evidence of service to college, discipline, and community
  • Assisting with student and program support (participating in department functions, evaluating student competencies, creating internship agreements, tracking student progress)
  • Completion of the Faculty Resource Center training FRC100 is required; FRC 200 is strongly recommended

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Terminal degree in related field
  • Three years full time (or part time equivalence) teaching experience
  • Successful online teaching and curriculum development experience
  • Scholarly work in discipline
