Job Description

Union College invites applications for the tenure-track Donald C. Brate '45-Stanley G. Peschel '52 Assistant Professorship in Statistics at the rank of Assistant Professor (appointments with a shortened tenure clock may be considered in exceptional cases for experienced candidates once a job offer is made), beginning September 1, 2027. Applications received by September 15, 2026 will receive full consideration.

At Union, institutional expectations and support are balanced between teaching and research; candidates should demonstrate excellence in both areas. The position is open to candidates who will have a Ph.D. in statistics by September 2027, who have strong teaching credentials in undergraduate statistics, and have a record of scholarly achievement that suggests a continuing commitment to scholarship in any sub-fields within statistics.

This position will play a key role in our growing Statistics, Data Analytics, and Financial & Actuarial Mathematics programs. Union currently has established minors in these three programs. The long-term goal is to grow these programs to majors. While a strong theoretical background in statistics is required, candidates who also have practical experience in addressing real problems with statistics, and who can teach practical statistical thinking and analysis of data for a specific purpose and within a specific context, are particularly desired. The teaching load is two courses per trimester with one course release during the first year.

The successful hire will develop courses in their area of expertise that may contribute to other programs at Union, especially the interdisciplinary programs in Data Analytics and Financial & Actuarial Mathematics.

About the Department of Mathematics

The Department of Mathematics is dedicated to helping students develop their abilities to reason logically, understand abstract concepts, and solve complex problems, while equipping them with the skills needed for advanced studies in mathematics. In addition to our own programs in mathematics, statistics, and financial and actuarial mathematics, our curriculum supports the College's academic offerings in the natural and social sciences, engineering, and interdisciplinary studies.

Our department takes great pride in its commitment to excellence in both teaching and scholarly activity. Our faculty engage in research across a wide range of fields, contributing to both academic knowledge and student learning. We particularly welcome applications from groups that have been traditionally underrepresented in statistics.

Please convey how your teaching, mentorship, and/or community service will support Union's commitment to inclusion.
