The Hussman Institute is currently seeking a Full Time Assistant Scientist to work onsite in Miami. The Assistant Scientist, SOM carries out a particular research agenda in support of the University's research goals and objectives. Moreover, the Assistant Scientist, SOM contributes to the scientific community by publishing research findings and promotes the University's reputation as a leader in the field.

CORE RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Contributes to basic and applied research activities and authors scientific publications, technical and agency reports, and patent preparations.

  • Collaborates with senior staff to publish findings in refereed journals.

  • Creates and conducts experiments and analyzes results.

  • Works with other researchers to use and develop end products.

  • Writes extramural proposals with approval from appropriate senior staff.

  • Provides ready access to all experimental data for managing staff.

  • Requests or acquires equipment and supplies for assigned project(s).

  • Uses the internet, surveys, legal documents, and other available sources to collect information.

  • Applies for grants to continue research and prepares materials for submission to granting agencies and foundations.

  • Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.

CORE QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

Doctorate degree - Philosophy (PhD) required

Experience:

Minimum 1 year of relevant experience required

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Technical Proficiency: Skilled in using office software, technology, and relevant computer applications.

  • Communication: Strong and clear written and verbal communication skills for interacting with colleagues and stakeholders.

Department Specific Functions

  • Genetic analysis of Alzheimer Disease Genetic Data and Bioinformatics analysis of associated data

  • Perform basic analyses of next-generation sequencing data including quality control filtering and bioinformatics interpretation

  • Conduct research in human disease models to evaluate candidate genes for above mentioned disorder

  • Publish original research articles in conjunction with the principal investigator

  • Confer with principal investigators to review work assignments and develop plans for research experiments; make minor modifications to existing laboratory procedures and techniques to meet the needs of the particular experiment as required

  • Review journals, abstracts, and scientific literature to keep abreast of new developments and to obtain information regarding previous experiments to aid in the design and development of original procedures and techniques.

  • Seek independent funding from foundations and associations for pilot studies with the appropriate permission from leadership

  • Assess and integrate non-medical drivers of health (e.g., socioeconomic, behavioral, environmental, neighborhood, food insecurity factors) with clinical and genomic data to support Alzheimer's disease research and risk modeling.

  • Prepare scientific progress reports for grant-funded projects (e.g., NIH RPPR), including summaries of aims, results, publications, and compliance with reporting requirements.

  • Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.
