Job Description

IDEXX is seeking a motivated Associate Bioprocess Scientist– Upstream & Downstream Support, Assay Design & Development to join our Assay Design and Development team. In this role, you will execute established upstream and downstream bioprocess protocols supporting reagent and biologics development programs for IDEXX's diagnostic products. Working under general supervision and with guidance from senior scientists, you will contribute hands-on laboratory execution across cell line development, protein expression, purification, and analytical characterization.

This position is ideal for a scientist who brings strong attention to detail, reliable execution of established protocols, and a collaborative mindset to a fast-paced, regulated laboratory environment.

Why this role matters

As a Bioprocess Scientist, you will provide dedicated day-to-day execution capacity for cell culture, expression, and purification work that supports IDEXX's Companion Animal Group diagnostic programs. The Bioprocess team currently supports numerous concurrent, active development projects, and much of this workload depends on routine, guided execution work that requires dependable, detail-oriented scientist capacity.

Success in this role requires precise execution, careful documentation, and the ability to work closely with senior scientists and cross-functional partners to keep active programs moving forward.

In this role, you will:

  • Create and maintain stable CHO cell lines supporting new product development.
  • Perform transient expression in CHO cells to produce recombinant proteins for research and development use.
  • Purify recombinant antibodies and other biomolecules using AKTA and Protein Maker chromatography systems.
  • Perform routine analytical characterization of purified material, including SDS-PAGE, isoelectric focusing (iEF), and size-exclusion chromatography (SEC).
  • Execute established upstream and downstream protocols with guidance, following instructions with close attention to detail.
  • Maintain accurate, complete records using electronic lab notebooks and GMP-compliant documentation practices.
  • Assist senior scientists on project-specific activities across concurrent development programs.
  • Analyze and document experimental data with guidance, using solid computer, spreadsheet, and basic statistical skills.
  • Notice small changes or deviations in routine work and communicate them promptly to senior scientists.
  • Maintain laboratory equipment, reagent inventory, and day-to-day operations supporting cell culture and purification activities.

What you need to succeed:

  • AA, BS or BA degree in a relevant scientific discipline (e.g., biology, biochemistry, bioengineering) or at least 2 years of relevant bench work experience.
  • Critical thinking, evaluation, and judgment skills, or specialized professional knowledge acquired through education or work experience.
  • Analyze and document data with guidance. Solid computer, spreadsheet, and statistical/mathematical skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and self-motivation. Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to execute established protocols with guidance and work with established products and procedures. Work on problems of limited scope following standard practices and procedures.
  • Hands-on experience with mammalian cell culture, including CHO stable cell line generation and/or transient expression.
  • Experience with chromatography-based purification systems, such as AKTA or Protein Maker instruments.
  • Experience with protein analytical techniques such as SDS-PAGE, iEF, or SEC.
  • Familiarity with electronic lab notebooks (ELN) and GMP or other regulated record-keeping practices.
  • Exposure to a regulated, GMP-adjacent, or quality-controlled laboratory environment.
  • Consistently meeting the objectives of assigned tasks and maintaining focus despite obstacles or setbacks.
  • Flexibility to adjust approach as priorities shift across upstream and downstream project needs.
  • Willingness to seek advice and coaching while building independent judgment over time.
  • Sharing new and useful ideas and making productive contributions to the team; effectively collaborate with upstream and downstream stakeholders.
  • Listening attentively to others' insights, advice, and instruction, and separating and combining activities into an efficient workflow.

What you can expect from us:

  • Salary range starting at $62,000 based on experience
  • Opportunity for annual cash bonus
  • Health / Dental / Vision Benefits Day-One
  • 5% matching 401k
  • Additional benefits including but not limited to financial support, pet insurance, mental health resources, volunteer paid days off, employee stock program, foundation donation matching, and much more
