Job Description:

The veterinary technician in this position will assist in organization of equipment and activities in the Surgical Training center. They will be assisting with instruction of veterinary students in technical skills related to the practice of veterinary medicine primarily within the surgical skills curriculum. They will assist with the coordination of other educational activities that may or may not be a component of the Clinical & Surgical Skills program.

Associate Clinical Specialist 3

60% Perform technical responsibilities within the Surgical Training Center including, but not limited to -

  • Organizing and ordering supplies for surgical training
  • Assist with instructional labs related to surgical training (including setup and breakdown)
  • Assist with cadaver and model management for teaching purposes
  • Assist in oversight and assignment of student worker activities
  • Assist with intake and discharge of dogs and cats utilized in spay/neuter labs

15% Assist with the scheduling and coordination of supplies (cadaveric, model, reusable/disposable materials), set up/breakdown of materials, and general assistance during 5010 electives and other educational activities (which may or may not be within Clinical & Surgical Skills programs).

10% Assist with setup, breakdown, and execution of OSCEs within the Clinical & Surgical Skills program.

10% Perform additional supportive tasks related to the Clinical & Surgical skills program including, but not limited to:

  • Assist with outreach efforts to promote the Surgical Training Center and Clinical/Surgical Skills programs
  • Assist with research projects related to the Clinical/Surgical Skills programs and/or education
  • Assist with development of new models and maintenance of current models used in the Clinical/Surgical Skills program

5% Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor's Degree with 4 years of experience OR associate's degree in veterinary technology with 4 years' experience; OR Certification as a vet tech or equivalent with 4 years' experience; OR 7 Years of experience in a working environment with similar duties.

Minimum Certifications/Licenses:

Must have and maintain a valid class E driver's license.

Preferred Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree with 5 years of experience

Specific Experience: Small animal or large animal clinical experience, with demonstration of basic surgical preparation and patient care (pre-op/post-op).

Organizational experience (manager) that demonstrates ability to be self-directed in overseeing a dedicated space regarding equipment, materials, and staff.

Job Competencies: (Proficient)

  • Excellent small animal patient handling and restraint using low-stress techniques.
  • Able to work independently to manage inventory and order supplies.
  • Able to work independently to setup and breakdown equipment/supplies for teaching activities.
  • Able to work in a small team to provide general oversight of a dedicated educational space.
  • Demonstrates ability to properly manage sterility of materials and dedicated spaces.
  • Able to communicate effectively with team members to ensure a positive and productive work environment.
  • Able to provide basic instruction and oversight to student employees regarding daily tasks and responsibilities.

Special or Physical Qualifications:

  • Vehicle Operation- University employees whose principal responsibilities of employment include operating a vehicle, performing maintenance on a vehicle, or supervising any public employee who operates or maintains a vehicle and positions with an expectation to travel will require an MVR and are subject to drug screens per PM-33/PS-67/FASOP HR-04.

  • Safety and Security Sensitive Job- Safety and security-sensitive positions are defined as those positions where any form of substance abuse may affect University activities through unsafe work behavior/performance or error in judgment; or where substance abuse could jeopardize the safety and well-being of employees, other personnel, or the general public, or cause significant damage to University property. This includes positions requiring firearms, access to controlled substances, handling hazardous material, operating heavy equipment or machinery, etc. These positions are subject to drug screens per PS-67/FASOP HR-04.

  • Required to be capable of lifting more than 50 pounds, stand or walk for prolonged periods, able to reach above and below the shoulder, kneel or sit on the floor, vision (near sight), vision (far sight), bending, push/pulling, climbing, sitting, twisting, grasping, and squatting

  • FERPA- As with all LSU employees, due to this position title and/or responsibilities, this position has an obligation to assist students in the acquisition of necessary services. Should a student appear in need of or seek assistance with issues of an emotional, behavioral, or mental health related matter they should be referred to the proper service within the Student Health Center. In situations where the student creates an impression that they are a danger to themselves or others, the advisor should immediately contact the Care Team, the Dean of Students or the appropriate law enforcement agency. The employee outside of those rights contained within FERPA should create no impression of client or patient confidentiality.
