Job Description

Enforcement and Trial Attorney

Join the Montana Commissioner of Securities and Insurance (CSI) as an attorney focusing on prosecuting criminal and administrative fraud cases, as well as representing the agency in other civil matters.

Salary: $95,000 - $125,000, depending on experience

Position Type: Full-time

Job Location: CSI's office in Helena, MT, or potential hybrid or remote work depending on the circumstances

Relocation expenses: Negotiable

What You'll Do

  • Manage cases from referral through final judgment, including drafting pleadings and briefs, and representing CSI at trial.

  • Prosecute administrative actions related to insurance and securities fraud and then represent CSI in potential appeals.

  • Represent CSI in civil litigation.

  • Collaborate with state and federal partners to prosecute complex white-collar criminal cases.

  • Exercise meaningful autonomy in your casework, supported by a team that values collegiality, excellence, and public service.

  • Provide advice to CSI's management related to insurance and securities cases.

Minimum qualifications

  • A Juris Doctor degree.

  • Exceptional legal research and writing skills.

  • The ability to work independently while meeting deadlines.

  • Membership in good standing in the State Bar of Montana, or the ability to become a member by an agreed-upon date. Individuals with 5 years of practice in another state may be able to apply for admission "on motion" to the Montana Bar. Details are available HERE.

  • Satisfactory completion of a criminal background check.

Preferred qualifications

  • 4 or more years of experience, including experience as lead counsel at trial.

  • 2 or more years of experience with insurance or securities law.
